From: Georg Plank Subject: (yello) Is Yello "out" of UK ? Date: 01 Oct 2000 16:21:41 +0200 Hi, dear Yello- fans! Last week I was to London , and of course I was looking for some Yello stuff. There was also a Record-fair there, but threre was nothing for us there. Also the Virgin, Tower and HMV stores had not a single Yello CD! Not to mention the second-hand shops.... It seems that Yello has never reached this island. Years ago the stores had a full collection of theStiff, Mercury and Electra stuff. I do not know what happened now. Is Yello really so "out" that the English have no chance to get any item? I feel the same way about Australian Shops. Several years ago I saw a copy of 'Oh Yeah' in K-Mart (a local variety store). All the albums could be bought in all bad record stores as well as the good ones. The last album released in Australia was Zebra. Now only a couple of shops in Sydney order in the albums and singles, at very expensive prices. (And being four hours west of Sydney that isn't terribly useful.) HMV did order in Pocket Universe but I am yet to see a copy of Motion Picture. Fortunately there is now internet shopping (I got my copies of Eccentrix and Motion Picture through Adori ), otherwise I would still be waiting... I come across the odd secondhand copy of One Second now and again but it seems that the major shops here no longer even bother to sto= ck their CD back catalogue. Despite getting pretty decent reviews for the la= st couple of albums and being recognised as major influences by many contemporary techno/electronic artists, Yello's record company seems to h= ave given up on the UK market. I looked long and hard for several weeks when Motion Picture came out, and then found what was probably a discarded pre= ss CD in a secondhand shop in Manchester for =A34! (Was it even properly rel= eased here?) The UK, to our credit, influences music to a tremendous degree for such a small country, but it can be terribly fickle. One of the things which sel= ls popular music is sex appeal. For some reason two moustachioed middle aged Swiss gentlemen just aren't getting teenage girl's underwear thrown at th= em while the talentless Robbie Williams is. I'm sure Kraftwerk have the same problem. I applaud Yello's change of direction over the last two albums b= ut it isn't getting promoted and therefore not getting sold. Yeesh...Yello ain't cheap to come by these days. Maybe we all should get together, rent the space, and try to get them to come and do a live gig sometime. Who knows? Here in Seattle, I can still find Yello at some of the more dedicated import shops, but VERY little anymore at the big box retailers, unless it's used (and that's taking a chance too). It took me forever to find PU, and I only found it on the internet (CDconnection.com). I looked forever because damned be me if I pay a retailer $35(US) for a collection of anything. Anyhoo, the website I did find it at had it, shipped it, and I got it in 72 hours. The packaging looked like it was done by amateurs (stuffed pieces of fabric and bubble wrap in a padded manila envelope) but they had it....I got it in 72hrs...and cost me only $16 minus 3 bucks for shipping. They did have quite a few other Yello titles (at the time of my order) that I couldn't find elsewhere. Don't construe this as an advertissment for them, BUT they had what I wanted, and I got pronto. Yello are signed to=20 Phonogram and in their core market (Germany/Western Mainland Europe) are=20 given a relative degree of freedom over artistic decisions etc. This is not=20 so in UK/US - in UK they are still perceived by the mainstream as a "novelty= "=20 act best known for "The Race" and acting as Shirley Bassey's backup band,=20 while in USA their recordings were always difficult to get hold of and they=20 have best a "cult" reputation. This means for these "territories" Phonogram's subsidiaries aren't so=20 generous and want them to sign to short-term contracts whose renewal depends= =20 on commercial success ie another "Race" - this the band refuse to do and thu= s=20 no CD of theirs has been commercially released in the UK since "PU=A3. The C= Ds=20 are available via the Net from online stores in Europe - but otherwise... This has of course meant that their profile in these countries has declined=20 and will no doubt continue to decline and will make it less likely that=20 retail stores will stock their existing releases. Though that said I am not=20 aware that any of the releases prior to PU have actually been deleted in the= =20 UK... yet. So the solution... Yello should go independent and free themselves from the clutches of=20 Phonogram. However, I doubt this will actually happen... Dieter and Boris'=20 relationship is not such that I could see them wanting to take on the=20 responsibility of running their own record company and in the part of the=20 world where they have always been most popular their records are distributed= =20 and promoted as they should be. I don't think they want to conquer the world= =20 at this stage and they must know that the internet has provided a means for=20 many of us to access their recordings anyway. It's sad of course, so much crap out there selling in bucketfuls, but then=20 again what's new...
