Filmworks 5 & 6, both very very new and both featuring Zorn actually
playing, will be out in the US on November 19, probably around the same
time in Europe and elsewhere. Filmworks 3 & 4, supposedly already
available in Europe on some label, will be reissued by Tzadik in 1997,

Patrice has been on vacation lately. I think the discography is more up
to date than the latest posted version... he indicated to the Zorn List
recently that it had reached 100 entries. Hey, let's cut him some
slack, he maintains many, many discographies (Zeena, Ikue, Tim Berne,
Marty Ehrlich, etc.) so he's bound to get behind now and then! :-)

It was back in February that the new studio album was announced. Because
SubMeta stopped after four releases, it was never finished. It may be
finished someday.
In the meantime, there is a live CD from a few European performances in the
last six months that will be coming out sometime in the next six months.
Brain, who has always been the drummer for Praxis, is now the drummer for
Primus and I am not sure what role he will play with Praxis in the future.

tracks are getting re-done? Is there even going to *be* a replacement
bar kokhba?
And, by the way, a friend of mine told me who Bar Kokhba was: he was
regarded by the Jewish people about 2000 years ago or so as the mesiah.
He led the jews into the mountains to wage guerila warefare on the romans,
and had some measure of success for a while, but eventualy was defeated,
since the roman war machine was just too big. This may not be totally
correct, but it's the general idea. Fairly strong set of images which
John Zorn is applying to his music: "Masada", "Bar Kokhba"...

The video's are available in the states, according to one review I read in

Dear Jascha,
Bobby Previte is one of a growing band of drummer composers, who work
convincingly in the more advanced areas of jazz, but who also have a
background in rock,(cf. Joey Barron, Edward Vesala.)
Some of his earlier work, such as Music for the Moscow Circus, is less
than compelling, but since his breakthrough with *Empty Suits* (on
Gramavision), he's been producing a string of powerful and innovative
albums. (Although I wouldn't recommend the follw-up *Slay the Suitors*,
which I thought was boring.)
A lot of Previte's best work is on the Enja label. I'd recommend
*Weather Clear, Track Fast*, and *Hue and Cry*, all featuring great
players like Don Byron, Marty Ehrlich, Anthony Cox, etc.
*Pushing the Envelope* on Gramavision and a new release on Koch are also
meant to be good, but I haven't heard them.
Hope this is helpful,
Rohan

Yes, yes (at St. Ann's in Brooklyn), I haven't, and probably. When I

we made no attempt to sync up with the film. It was a record, so we made a

I'd just like to mention that I picked up Bobby Previte's new album "Too
Close to the Pole" last week and it's great. All that you'd expect from a
Previte band - dense, driving polyrhythms; punchy horn lines; nice
compositional development. Most of the players are familiar to me, but I
hadn't heard of trumpeter Cuong Vu before. On this evidence, he's very
good (with a Dave Douglas-like sense of formalism and huge harmonic
chops). Laster and D'Angelo also play great, and you can hear Lindsey
Horner quoting from old Zappa basslines. What fun. Be sure to hang
around, too, for the unlisted track 7.

I just got this album, which somehow has the reputation of being
the most unlistenable album of all time--great, great stuff.
Anyway, there are a lot more instruments than people playing,
which means that either a) they overdubbed, which seems odd
for a no wave album from about '80, especially as it might seem
to take more technical proficiency than these folks had,
or b) they had more people on the album. The listed personnel
are:
Sumner Crane: vocal, guitar, piano, percussion
Don Burg: Bass clarinet, vocal on one track
Mark Cunningham: Horns
Ikue Mori: Strings, percussion on two tracks
Arlindo & Dantas Lins: percussion on one track (one that Mori
is credited with percussion on)
There are often more than one brass instrument (one's always
a trombone, I think), and sometimes strings, percussion, and
piano or guitar at the same time. I think; instrumentation
isn't easiest to decipher. Does anyone know whether this was
overdubbed or had more players, and if so who?
(Burg is clearly a woman and no doubt the China Burg who
plays guitar and vocal for Mars. Crane was Mars's other
guitarist/vocalist; Cunningham, who produced John Gavanti,
the bassist. Any info about the future fate of these
geniuses whose commercial appeal was sabotaged by inaccurate
press would also be welcome.)

i'm pretty sure that this stuff is
credited in the liner notes as
"all photographs courtesy The Dr. Stanley B. Burns
Collection of Historic Medical Photography"
however, you can also view a number of
these images in a book compiled by
Joel Peter-Witkin (his own photography
work is excellent too) called "Harms Way"
here's a brief write-up from the web:
Selected by Andy Grundberg in The New York Times Book Review as one of
the ten best photography books of 1994, HARMS WAY brings together four
unusual collections which had been hidden from then history of
photography. Edited and with an introduction by Joel-Peter Witkin, the
book includes turn-of-the-century crime scenes, nineteenth-century
asylum inmate portraits with calligraphic annotations detailing the
patient's diagnoses, nineteenth-century medical photographs,
and a selection of images from the Kinsey Institute for Sex Research.
Contributors include Eugenia Parry Janis, Stanley Burns, M.D. and
James Crump. The ability of the photograph to show us our
powerlessness in the face of madness, lust, disease and death,
survives in these brittle and arresting images. American Photo called
Harms Way "A disquieting ride through the heart of darkness," while
William T. Vollmann in The New York Times Book Review said "The
gradiloquent title is in fact accurate...It is impossible to do
justice to this beautiful book, which made me realize all over again
how valuable documentary photography is."

Edward Strickland has a book called American Composers with a chapter on
Zorn in it. There's also an interview with Zorn in William Duckworth's
Talking Music.
Both of these books are useful in their dealings with Zorn 'cause there's
relatively little fannish worship.
I haven't seen any of either book online.
Hope this helps.

He recorded an album with Alfred Harth called Indianer Fur Morgan which was
quite excellent and is unavailable, aprt from some tracks on a Japanese import
(which also includes the great Peking Oper which Otomo has recently
re-interpreted) Previous to this they had a big band called something like
Soganantes (something) Orchestra.
Now he is a composer more than performer with things like Shadow (Landscape
with Argonauts), Man in an Elevator, Prometheus Unbound (which they performed
in London recently amongst other pieces). He used to work a lot with German
playright Heiner Muller (deceased) and has contributed to seminars at the ICA
on text in music/theater.
His work seems to be informed by the radical left-wing theatre of Germany
which spawned Fassbinder and is wonderful theatre in itself.
Highly recommend Shadow/Landscape and the Peking Oper piece he performed with
Harth.

I don't think the fall of the Bill Frisell trio had anything to do with
Kermit getting fired, according to the Frisell cover story in Down Beat
some months ago, Joey wanted to leave to spend more time on his own
projects, and Bill didn't really have any motivation to get a new drummer
and pretend it was all the same. It was for that reason that the trio
sort of 'disbanded' at that point and Bill formed his new quartet.
And for the records, whenever he did play the Buster Keaton music, he did
so along with the films. Look on the inside cover of 'Go West.'
There's a picture of them right there.

I saw a bunch of Witkin's stuff by accident at the Gugenheim whilst
visiting NYC a while ago. His photos could certainly be quite at home on
the cover of a Naked City or Painkiller album - they're absolutely
amazing.
As for where these pictures come from, someone on this list mentioned
that the titles and pictures for a few albums coincide with art books
that coame out around the same period (Absinthe was one, i'm told). It
is quite likely that the photo collection 'Naked City' came out in book

the cover of the first Naked City albums comes from a collection of photos
by a photographer named Weegee called (you guessed it, Naked City). The
collection was published in 1945 (now available from DaCapo), so
although it was an obvious inspiration for Zorn, it wasn't contemporaneous
with Zorn's name search. The photos from Leng Tch'e were published in a
book called Tears Of Eros (City Lights) in which Georges Bataille (another
great inspiration for Zorn) talks about sex/death (what else?) in various
works of art, from cave paintings up through photographs.

Heiner Goebbels has released a number of excellent recordings on ECM:
Der Mann Im Fahrstuhl
Ensemble Modern
Horstuck
Ou Bien Le Debarquement Desastreux
Shadow/Landscape with Argonauts
"Horstuck" is a 3 CD set of radio plays (in German) - not released in the
states. I don't speak German, but I like it...
"Shadow/Landscape..." is one of my favorite recordings of the last few
years. Goebbels recorded various people on the street in Boston reading
passages from Edgar Allen Poe and Heiner Muller, mixing them together with
musical passages. Definitely worth checking out.
"Ensemble Modern" is an interesting collection of modern classical compositions.

Several times now I've seen anouncements for Rhythmagic by Aiyb Dieng to
be released on Subharmonic on 10/29. Can this be true? (I've already got
the import, I'm just curious). Also, Ear/Rational's new update claims to

This is happening. However, Bill Laswell was not involved in this and out
of respect for how Aiyb feels about it, Subharmonic's release will not be
referenced at the Axiom Web Site. Someone asked on another list about
royalty payments for the musicians - I can't comment, but you can read the
previous sentence again.

That is very interesting - Anton has been selling them himself for $20. It
is possible that some of the copies that were sitting in someone's house in
Japan made their way into distribution.
On the topic of Anton, the new Golden Palominos disc, _Dead Inside_, with
performance poet/chanter Nicole Blackman, was released this week on Restless.

Axiom and other Polygram labels and Sony will be putting out stuff
regularly. I think there is a good relationship with Sony for jazz stuff.
Unfortunately, the small labels that put out so much good experimental stuff
are not usually well funded and don't have enough personnel to effectively
manage promotion and distribution.
Bill's most recent label, SubMeta, has gone under. A new label, Ion, is
starting to put out some stuff, with its first release being
_Tetragrammaton_, which has two incredible tracks combining jungle and trip
hop beats with horn work from Bayard Lancaster and Graham Haynes.
SubRosa is also doing a lot of work with Bill now.
>
>Is there a Laswell list? What is the other list mentioned above???
There is no Laswell list. The list with the most Laswell discussion on it
is the ambient list, which ventures well beyond ambient when it comes to
Laswell, but otherwise is filled with stuff that may or may not interest
people on this list. Some of that stuff includes periodic flame wars. The
ambient list is ambient@hyperreal.com and subscribing is probably to the
standard majordomo type address there, otherwise, info should be at
www.hyperreal.com.

Nicole Blackman is the vocalist on the new Golden Palominos CD. She did one
solo CD with Anton producing, about a year ago. It is very quiet and almost
folky. She did one a few years before that, but I haven't heard it and I

Haven't seen the disc yet, but Baker's a great player who's done a lot of
traditional, early jazz stuff as well as being on one of the first of
Chadbourne's Parachute records.
When I first saw this disc listed, I thought Baker's combination of trad &
free playing would be a good one for a Nichols tribute, since Nichols did a
lot of New orleans style playing himself.

The full title is "Spinning Song - Duck Baker Plays the Music of
Herbie Nichols." It's a solo guitar record and it's wonderful.
Here are the tracks:
1. The Third World 4:03
2. The Happenings 4:34
3. Lady Sings the Blues 5:16
4. Nick at T's 4:46
5. House Party Starting 5:22
6. 2300 Skidoo 4:01
7. Portrait of Ucha 4:06
8. 134th St. 3:46
9. Spinning Song 4:47
It's a solo guitar record. Duck uses a selection of different
guitars to suit the character of the individual pieces. He is
a pretty stellar improviser of the John Fahey/Leo Kottke variety
(as opposed to the Derek Bailey variety!). But Henry Kaiser
and Jim O'Rourke say wonderful things about him, and evidently
the idea of doing a solo Nichols album was Zorn's.
The disc may seem terribly conservative to those who prefer the
extreme, but it's lovely and well-recorded, and really reveals
the architecture of these little bop gems. I especially like
the woozy blues sliding around in "Lady Sings the Blues."
Baker's notes are intelligent and informative, and reveal that
he spent time with the great trombonist and Nichols champion
Roswell Rudd, who told Baker a great deal about Nichols's life
and circumstances, affecting the way Baker interpreted the
tunes. "Knowning that Ucha was 'a really crazy lady' in
Nichols' life that Herbie 'maybe never really got over' made
a huge difference when approaching [Portrait of Ucha]. Even the
instrument used - a miniature Mexican guitar with built-in acoustic
distortion - was determined by having that information," Baker
writes in his notes. He also acknowledges Bruce Ackley, Ben
Goldberg and John Schott as having provided "charts and pointers."
A truly refreshing alternative. If it's not in stores near you
now, it should be very very soon.

I especially like
the woozy blues sliding in "Lady Sings the Blues."

Dear Friends and Fellow Improv Fiends,
=0D
I am writing to inform you about an upcoming series of shows at the Insti=
tute of Contemporary Art at 955 Boylston Street, Boston, Massachussetts, =
involving a collaboration between some exceptional musicians and visual a=
rtists =
=0D
The music performances have been curated by Boston based independent cura=
tor Gillian Levine and the Boston Creative Music Alliance, a non-profit o=
rganization for the presentation for new music. The musicians featured in=
this series seek to create new formal contexts for improvisations that s=
ubvert traditional ethnic, racial, or cultural boundaries. Through their =
choice of material, they create framework that explore and define new rel=
ationships between composer and performer and personal and cultural ident=
ity. The use of improvisation as a performance practise insures that the =
performers are an integral part of an ongoing dialogue that refines and r=
edefines these relationships each time a piece is played.

Masada. New York City composer and performer John Zorn has=
been described as "A one man musical revolution...all over the stylistic=
map". Masada, a quartet featuring Zorn on alto sax, Dave Douglas on trum=
pet, basist Greg Cohen, and long time collaborator Joey Barron on drums. =
Often moving in a minor-key world of lament and augmented with the intens=
ity of Zorn's vision, Masada establishes a common ground between Hebraic =
music and African American jazz. =

Friday November 15, 1996, at 9:30 pm
Excelsior is a Boston based quartet which includes accordi=
onist Evan Harlan, violinist Mimi Rabson, electric guitarist Claudio Raga=
zzi, and drummer Grant Smith. Drawing fromt their collective experiences =
and classical avant-garde, Irish, Klezmer, Latin, rock, and jazz, the gro=
up explores the music of European classical traditions from many differen=
t angles. Their first CD Declassified (Mark Set Go) features their=
radical re-imagings of selections from 24 Preludes and Fugues for Pia=
no , Op.87 by Shostakovich, as well as works by Barber, Stravinsky an=
d Poulenc. Described as "King Crimson meets Astor Piazolla," their music=
complex-and witty-and unafraid of taking chances , yet respectful of its=
source material. Founder Evan Harlan has recorded and performed with th=
e Klezmer Conservatory Band, and Orange Then Blue. Mimi Ra=
bson, a founding member of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, also lea=
ds the Really Eclectic String Quartet (RESQ). Claudio Ragazzi led =
the award winning Latin jazz quintet Ananda and has recorded and p=
erformed with Danilo Perez, Ralph Towner and others. Grant Smith, also a=
Klezmer Conservatory Band member, has toured with the alternative=
rock bands the Violent Femmes and Hypnotic Clambake.

Make a Move Quintet. Henry Threadgill refuses to call his w=
ork jazz. "Jazz is part of my vocabulary...(but) I consider myself an int=
ernational musician." Coming out of the Chicago Association for the Advan=
cement of Creative Musicians (AACM) of the '60s, he made waves with his f=
irst avant jazz trio Air, an interactive group that recorded twelv=
e albums, toured internationally, and remained together until the mid-80s=
=2E Switching to a larger unit, the Henry Threadgill Sextett, allo=
wed the composer to widen his exploration of instrumental roles and range=
s while blending a variety of musical styels into his repertoire. Since 1=
989 Threadgill's main vehicle has been Very Very Circus, a septet =
he named for its likeness to a multi-ringed circus with "so many things g=
oing on at once". The latest ensemble with Brandon Ross (guitar), Tony Ce=
dras (accordion and harmonium), Stomi Takeishi (bass), J.T. Lewis (drums)=
and the leader (saxophone and flute) again brings unique instrumental so=
norities and a variety of cultural allusions into a jazz and blues based =
music for improvisers. Threadgill has participated in numerous projects w=
ith artisits in other media. He currently resides in Goa, India.

Alva Rogers. In an evening of songs accompanied by guitarist Marvi=
Sewell, new York's "Down Diva" addresses the issues of race and =
gender and cultural stereotypes with uncanny wit and directness while dra=
wing upon musical styles ranging from jazz to gospel, blues to funk. An a=
ccomplished actress, she has three films to her credit: Spike Lees' Sc=
hool Daze; a leading role in Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust, and most recently in Shu Lea Cheang's Fresh Kill, an Eco-Cybern=
oia film. Alva Rogers has also written for and performed in a great varie=
ty of musical projects and for theater, TV, and radio. Her most recent co=
llaboration with writer/director Lisa Jones resulted in the creation of t=
wo plays produced for National Public Radio: Aunt Aida's Hand (199=
0) and Stained (1991). She recently presented Kissing and Telli=
ng - songs about life and the pursuit of love at the New York's Publi=
c Theater as part of George C Wolfe's Festival of New Voices. A native of=
Chicago, Marvin Sewell was working with many of the local jazz and blues=
musicians at an early age. He was a member of Jack DeJohnettte's Spec=
ial Edition, the Jorge Sylvester Quintet and PBR Streetgang=
among others. Currently he tours with Cassandra Wilson and often pla=
ys with poet Tracy Morris.

The Far East Side Band. Poet, filmmaker, and electric violinist Ja=
son K. Hwang, a second generation Asian American, bings together musician=
s from Japan, Korea, and the United States in a group that establishe a u=
nique pan-Asian identity. Featured musicians include vocalist Sang Wong P=
ark, a native of Korea, on ajang and kayagum; Yukio Tsuji from Japan, on =
shakuhachi, percussion and zither and, most recently, African American Jo=
e Daly on tuba and electronics. Redefining their notions of jazz and Asia=
n musical traditions, this collective evokes an intimately spacious tonal=
and textural landscape. Atmospheric and texturally rich, each instrument=
is given time to explore its own particular sound, and they combine to m=
ake a music like nothing you have ever heard. The Far East Side Band are =

Is there any difference between the East Side Digital and the RecRec

I have seen copies of "Guitar Solos" from both E.S.D and RecRec, and the
cover "colors" were different. The cover from E.S.D were *much* darker

What about the other cds?

Haven't seen this, but with that lineup it looks like a must. (Though
I confess I don't know who Verkerk is...)

Totally shocked to find this one in Other Music in NYC last Saturday
(shameless plug for a fab store). I'm only about halfway through but
it's quite the informative bit of history for those of us who weren't
there for the germinative years of Zorn. Primitive recording quality
(but quite listenable), strikes me a bit like "Classic Guide to
Strategy" splattering into "Book of Heads" in a dark room. Four
tracks, ranging from 10 minutes to 20. Nice brief note from Eugene
reveals that he and Zorn split $30 for one of these gigs. Recorded
in 1980. If you don't find Incus in stores near you write to
14 Downs Road, London E5 8DS England. (Also just out is "S&M,"
a duo disc by highly regarded free guitarist Roger Smith and
flutist Neil Metcalfe (haven't listened to this yet).

Another ur-text of the fledgling Downtown scene. Better sound than
the above thanks to WKCR-FM. It's fascinating but I can't say I
go back to it frequently. Still, glad it's available.
I just want to mention in passing that Other Music (where I found
both of the above-described discs) will have a website and worldwide
mailorder service running by December, at least that's the current
plan. Once I hear more I'll post...

Burg metamorphoses from time to time under various names, so it's
difficult to know what we've missed... As 'Lucy Hamilton', she's recorded
two exceptional improvisational albums that stand far apart from most of
her former downtown co-horts --
The Drowning of Lucy Hamilton (early 80's) - instrumental duet with Lydia
Lunch (piano) (mid 80's) - reissued on Atavistic
Gerry Miles - with Haino Keiji (vocals, percussion) MLW (piano), Alan
Licht (church pipe organ) (1996) - released on Atavistic
Mark Cunningham - I believe he's teaching in Barcelona and has released an
album or two which I haven't heard. I recollect that he (or was it Crane?)
was involved with the early 80s group Don King...(Patrice?)...who had a
very nice EP of horns & drums (who did I lend this to?)

Barcelona is correct (another sensible american expat?)
The french magazine Revue & Corrigee put out a *very informative*
discography and interview of Marc Cunningham in one of its last
issues...
*lots* of stuff I had never heard of (they did the same trick with Ikue Mori
last year, and Patrice (this very unsensible european expat) took it all up
in his discography).
I could post a summary if anybody's interested.

My somewhat informed guess on this is that the Avant catalog is currently in
a type of limbo. Rumor has it they're in negotiations with Koch for
distribution, which won't affect prices but may help with availability. Until
this is resolved, I don't think Avant discs are being distributed. This is
why it's impossible to find the Derek Bailey jungle record, at least here in
NYC. I'm sure Steve Smith can shed more light on this topic.

Subject: CDs for sale\trade
Date: 15 Oct 1996 17:59:00 PDT
Hello,
Either my room is shrinking or my CD collection is just getting way
too big, so I'm interested in selling\trading some of my CD's to remove
some of the cluttered mess. Only a few are really Zorn related, so here's
the few that I'm willing to sell\trade that pertains to this list.
Mystic Fugu Orchestra - "Zohar"
- Zorn & Eye - Strange stuff I'm sure you've read about many times here.
Improvised Music - New York, 1981
Zorn, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, Sonny Sharrock, Bill Laswell, Charles
Noyes.
- Recording quality isn't very good, but I've NEVER seen this CD anywhere
(well, except this one)
Guitar Organism
- Kazuyuki K. Null w/ Fred Frith, Guy Lohnes, Ichiro Agata, Jim O'Rourke
Noisy guitar duets, What you'd probably expect from Null.
I may have more, but it could take forever to get through my CD
collection. I have tons of rock\alternative stuff I'm interested in
unloading, so if you're looking for something along those lines, let me
know and I might have it. Anyone interested in any of the above can
e-mail me a price or a list of possible trades. Sorry to use this list
for selling stuff, but I figured if they're just going to sit in my room,
then better to find someone on this list that might want them.
Also, someone posted the dates for Masada, and I thought since it was
left out that I'd mention again that they will be coming to Philadelphia
at the International House at Penn University on November 3rd. Hope to
see some of you there.

well, thje flexi consists of two napalm death songs from just as they

Ok, here's one to ponder: I was glancing back through what I guess was
last March's issue of Down Beat, with Mr. Bill on the cover. It kind of
blew through a bunch of what he would be working on (touring, new Ginger
Baker record, etc), and one thing they mentioned was that he and Wayne
Horvitz had been down in Nashville (yes, Nashville) working on a country
(yes, country) record that should see the light by the end of this year.
Is anyone able to at least marginally validate this and affirm I'm not
crazy? If this is the case, then I can't begin to imagine....
Later on all, have a good one...

I imagine it would sound very much like the Copland "covers" that Frisell
has done...his sound lends itself very much to country music and
American-folk harmony (a la Copland) in many ways.
And as Zorn says in the liner notes of News for Lulu: "When Bill does
surface from the trio texture he kills you with one of his tasty country
funk lines."

There are still much trouble to buy Zorn etc. CD's in Poland.
Not only that they're not available but also for the price.
I've got the "unofficial" VHS "PAL" copy of official, proffesional
recording
of MASADA, F.Frith and PRAXIS concerts in Poland made by Polish
Television.
MASADA played on Warsaw Summer Jazz Festival, July 1994,
F.Frith played with Rene Lussier, Mark Stewart and Nick Didkovsky in
Bydgoszcz, October 1995, supported by polish "MAZZOLL and Arythmick
Perfection"
PRAXIS played on Warsaw Summer Jazz Festival, June 1996.
I am interested in exchanging these materials for CD's which I can't buy
in Poland (e.g. FILMWORKS II) by post. (One VHS copy for one CD).
All of these VHS copies are the first copy from professional Betacam SP
tape.
Everybody who is inerested in and would like to help me, please conact
on
e-mail: Marcin.Witkowski@wor.tvp.com.pl
I could also buy and send an unique polish edition of "LIVE IN POLAND":
Wayne Horvitz & Pig Pen in the same way.
Sorry for my English.

It's true. Can't say too much about it except that it's done,
and includes the angelic-voiced fiddler Allison Krauss as well.

Why, so all those obscure records we've been collecting all these years
would finally get some collectors value? So Zorn could finally be
recognized as an important composer? So that record labels would finally
re-issue all of his out of print works? Or just so that he could jam with

Disc One: Loud, aggressive, almost thrashy stuff, pretty hardcore. Disc Two
is labeled ambient and is some of the darkest ambient around. Good stuff.
Japanese version adds a third live disc. Great cover photo (can be seen at

in reply to your review of execution ground:
the setup is Mick Harris (Ex napalm death), bill laswell (Master of the
DEEP) on bass, and zorn on sax. Their older stuff (Guts of a virgin &
Buried secrets) are basically spastic fits of chaos and emotion, and I
LOVE THEM! Execution ground is my favorite. first off, GO BUY IT!
the first disc starts spastic (one of the best album intros i've ever
heard) and moves on into deathy ambient dub (DEEP BASS ala laswell).
there's 3 songs, and each are awesome. Laswell's influence is more clear
on this album (especially since the other disc in the set is ambient, and
equally as awesome). I could go on, but you should just get it & love
it. I do. Also, everyone needs at least on copy of (Pleasanton, CA
locals) Smashing Lenny's mellons & a band called WALSHSTONE. ok. that's all.

It's Azonic, mostly noisy feedbacky guitar, mostly solo except for a little
bass from Bill Laswell. I like it, but I can't say I play it more than once
a year.
The label is Strata, availability is fairly poor since the pressing was
pretty small and the label is more or less gone. It seems to pop up in used
bins every now and then.

Well, I picked up the new Golden Palominos CD, "Dead Inside."
First, I must say that I love "Pure" & "This is how it feels"...both
CD's really grow on you with repeated listening. I've grown very
attached to that innocent-sweet-playful- voice of Lori Carson...to the
point where I have to get her solo CD's.
Anyway, Back to Dead Inside: I have to program my CD player to skip the
first track, "Victim". It truely portrays some of the most disturbing
images that have ever been uttered lyrically.
Maybe it's just me, but the whole CD is rather bleak, or dark and
nihilistic.... but I think it's just actually the lyrics & Nicole
Blackman's voice. It reminds me of a pissed-off Lori Anderson...no
singing, just spoken word over music....which can be great (the track,
"Drown" is quite good).
Any comments? Jeff?

I would disagree strongly with this characterization. At first, I thought
it was somewhat bleak, lyrically, but after a few weeks of listening it
dawned on me how funny it is. There is a tremendous amount of humor on this
CD, and, if you like somewhat ambient/techno grooves, great music.
Also, when I reviewed it a few months ago on another list, I used the term
"spoken word," and I got email from Nicole stating that she did not feel
that was appropriate, that she was half speaking, half chanting, and
occasionally almost singing. Fair enough, and it is closer to Laurie
Anderson (with far better rhythm tracks) than "spoken word."

I will have to get it from another computer since I changed a few weeks ago.
I will ask Nicole about posting her comments. It was Anton who used "spoken

Here is the stuff about Mark Cunningham I found in the
latest issue (28, June 96) of "Revue et Corrigee".
In fact it is an interview of Mark Cunningham based on a selection of
tracks with him playing. No exhaustive discography then, but lots of
(to me) obscure references. The list gives some records on which M.C.
can be found but not the actual song titles (it is unclear from the references
given if the record is by only one group/band/performer).
I left out the Mars records. In the interview, MC also mentions a band
called 3M which only did "2-3 concerts" and featured himself with
Mark Miller and Christian Marclay.

I don't know the Strata recording but feel compelled to add my 2¢ worth
regarding one of the more interesting surprises of last year's
purchases:
the Sub Rosa disc "Skinner's Black Box," which is half Andy Hawkins
(Azonic) and half Justin Broadrick (Godflesh). I'm not the biggest fan
of Blind Idiot God or Godflesh but I picked this up as it's part of the
swell Subsonic series, which is always at least interesting. While it's
the Justin Broadrick stuff that really knocked me for a loop (icy cold
bleak technoscrape guitar), I remember the Azonic stuff being pleasant
enough (and distinctly seem to remember tabla drums in the mix...).
For anyone who hasn't seen this series yet, it's up to its fourth
release.
There's a Fred Frith/Mark Ribot split CD in a yellow jewelcase, a Bill
Laswell/Nik Bullen split CD in a red case, and just out is a Page
Hamilton/Caspar Brötzmann duo disc in an orange case. (The Azonic/
Broadrick is green.)
And say, Jeff, how's the new Laswell drums 'n' bass thing with Ninj?

It's his seventh album, but still pretty early in his overall
development. If you like it you should check out its predecessor,
"The Ancestors," which adds the always-worthwhile Ray Anderson
to the mix. (Also, for those looking for the first two
LPs "The Five Year Plan" and "7X," Tim just found several boxes
of sealed copies in his basement and sold them to Little Brother,
a label and distributor based in Portland.)
I don't know how widely this is known, but the long-awaited
reissue of the Tim Berne/Bill Frisell duo CD "Theoretically"
hit stores on Tuesdaythe 15th, as did a Koch Jazz reissue of
the deleted Columbia title "Fulton Street Maul" which featured
Berne, Frisell, Hank Roberts and Alex Cline.
"Fulton Street Maul" is a dense, challenging record, and one
that I'm particularly pleased to have convinced my company to
reissue. "Sanctified Dreams," a truly excellent introduction
to Tim's work, is due for reissue in March.
Tim really came into his own during his years on JMT, further
refining the raucous, angular, funky style he's known for now.
"Fractured Fairy Tales" is a great place to start, but be advised
that a lot of the JMT stuff is currently out of print and may
be completely unavailable for a long time. In particular, if
you see the two albums by Miniature (Berne plus Roberts and Baron)
grab 'em before they're gone.
The Blood Count discs on JMT are still widely available, and
feature Tim with a really strong working band of Chris Speed,
Mike Formanek and Jim Black, with special guest Marc Ducret on
electric guitar. The feature that stands out to many is the
extraordinary length of the tunes -- from 15 or 20 minutes to
40 or even nearly 50! -- but these are suites of sustained
invention and multiple moods, and for this admittedly strongly
biased listener they never get dull. Start with the track
"The Other" for a great intro to this band.
Tim's got two new projects coming soon. JMT's successor
label, Winter and Winter, will be issuing a trio record called
Big Satan which features Berne with Marc Ducret and Tom Rainey.
So far Winter and Winter has yet to find an American distributor
but I'm sure they will get one by the time this record is due
in February.
[WARNING: THE FOLLOWING COULD BE CONSTRUED AS AN ADVERTISEMENT,
SO BAIL OUT HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT...]
The other project, one I'm personally involved with, is Tim's
return to self-released independence. He's got a new label,
ScrewGun, which I'm helping him run. We plan to have the
first release available by December. We hope to have it in all
the better jazz and alternative stores, we'll do mailorder and
have a website, and he'll be selling the disc on his Bloodcount
tour next spring. It's called "Bloodcount Unwound" and is
a three CD set of live Bloodcount recordings from Berlin and
Ann Arbor, recorded in 1995 without Ducret. Very little material
is repeated from the JMT releases, and there are some seriously
stomping new pieces like "Mr. Johnson's Blues." Three discs in a
letter-pressed cardboard box, retailing for $30. (We gave up
on the idea of a latex package to keep the costs down...) The
mastering was done by David Torn over the last two weeks and is
said to be extraordinary (I've not heard the finished master yet).
We have lots of plans for future ScrewGun releases by Tim and
other artists, and Tim plans to keep the prices as low as possible.
When there's more details to be shared I'll let you know. You're
the first to hear about any of this...

This depends on how much you like drums 'n' bass, which on this list may be
an interesting question. I really like when I'm in the right mood. You
wouldn't want to listen to this while waiting for the results of a pregnancy
test, for example. In other words, it is frenetic drums 'n' bass with a
little synth stuff thrown in. Ninj is certainly one of the best
practitioners in this genre, and it is far more interesting than a lot of
other stuff.
However, for Zorn listers, Tetragramaton: _Submerge_ might be far more
desirable. This mixes up the beats a little more, with some drums 'n' bass
and showcases Bayard Lancaster and Graham Haynes on two long Material
tracks. Fairly typical Laswell treatments on the horn tracks, so purists
(can't imagine there are all that many on this list) beware, amazing
incorporation of electronic beats tracks with Indian drone with ambient
synth with horns. The other three tracks (one from Fullcone, one from DJ
Spooky, one from David Quinlan and DJ Soul Slinter) fall more-or-less in the
trip hop genre.
Also coming is _Arcana 2_, with Tony Williams, Ornette, Pharoah, Laswell,
and a whole bunch more.

Subject: John Zorn's Cobra in Melbourne
Date: 22 Oct 1996 11:22:12 +1000
Hi all,
Yesterday nite, I experienced Zorn's Cobra for the first time.
Before that, I have no experience with the rules of Cobra nor have I heard
any of the released Cobra CDs, so I went to the show with no pre-concept of
what it's all about, but I was very excited about it because I know I'll be
surprised and surprised I did!!
The show was held in The Continental in South Yarra in the City of
Melbourne. The place was packed at around 9:30pm. BTW, no tickets were
available on the nite, it was completely sold out.
The musicians involved in this show were members of Mr. Bungle (who's
currently touring Oz), and others. Sorry I'm not very familiar with Mr.
Bungle (except Mike Patton who was present) and the other musicians so I
can't list any names.
Two performance were made before the start of Cobra. The first, lasting at
about 30 mins features a double bass-player, a gong player and a prompter
who also fiddled with a sampler (? - not sure what it was, but it made some
weird noises) and also rubbing a beer bottle against some stylofone (sp?)
which made some horrible screeching noise (imagine scratching the blackboard
with your finger nails and having it amplified a 100 times....YUCK!!!). This
piece was kinda interesting, the prompter signals to each musicians what to
play, what intensity to play, and when to stop. Off course, there won't any
groove happening, each musician basically "improvised" when promted. I
thought the ending was really cool as the gong player hammers the gong,
building up a college of sound ending this performance with a bang.
The second performance involved Mike Patton on "sampler"-thingy and a
percussionist (same guy who played the gong earlier) who played a variety of
Asian percussion such as a Korean flower drum, some Chinese ritual cymbals
etc. In this performance, the duo created an atmosphere similar to a
Japanese traditional opera. Patton chants and mumble emotionally like an Jap
opera singer while the percussionist beats the drums. It's hard to explain
since I'm no expert in Jap trad music, but it's really deep. Some members of
the audience were laughing away because Patton was basically "singing" in
gibberish, but both of them were really serious about what they were doing
and also with the atmosphere they were creating. This made me think about
how these days the more adventurous western musicians (Derek Bailey,
Laswell, Zorn etc) are incorporating Eastern influences into their
experiments/improvisations while the Eastern world are trying to become more
Westernised.
The 2nd performance lasted approx 30mins again.
Then the game started. There were, from left of stage to the right, a
trombone/saxophone/duck-wistle player, a cellist, a drummer, an electric
bass player, another drummer, an acoustic guitar player, a double bass
player, Patton on "sampler"-thingy and voice, a flute/saxphone player and a
keyboard/sampler player. All these musicians were on the stage and the
game-master/prompter person is standing off stage. Bare in mind that the
Continetal is not exactly a huge place, therefore there won't a lot of space
to move around.
Again, I'm not familiar with how thing works in Cobra so I spend a whole lot
of time figuring out what happened or what the hand signals and cards meant.
(Anyone care to share the rules of the game?). All in all, they played, I
think, 5 sets of games, and were asked to do another one from the
enthusiastic audience. The entire set took close to 1:30hrs.
The best part of Cobra is to see the musicians enjoying themselves on stage
as well as the audience. Since all pieces were done on the spot, we didn't
know what to expect. I think that's the reason why I felt that Cobra is
exciting.
In summary, a great nite of truely improvised music. A lot of the people who
attended the show expected more Mr Bungle material but were truely shocked
with what's going on. I've been dying to attend a concert similar to all the
great European imrpovisation festivals such as Comapny and I must say this
comes close (IMHO).
Anyways, hope you had a good read :-) Sorry if I wasn't clear on some of the
things.

My favorite disc by Berne is Fractured Fairytales. It's more controlled
than his recent stuff, but that is a good thing. I find his playing with
Bloodcount to be a little noodley sometimes. In general I've always
thought that Tim Berne was a much stronger composer than improviser, and
he's one of my favorite composers. The first Chaos Totale is great too. It
features some strong playing by Marc Ducret and Bobby Previte.
Bassist,Mark Dresser (one of my all-time faves) plays his buns off on this
one. By the way, I just got Invocation, Dresser's new solo CD. I like it,
but
I'm interested in some other opinions.

Henry Hill, a filmmaker, came through Pittsburgh a year or so
ago, showing films that included videos for "Batman" and "Igneous
Ejaculation" from the first Naked City album, and Zorn's version
of "Das Kleines Leutnant des Lieben Gottes" off the Hal Willner
Kurt Weill tribute, "Lost in the Stars." (I believe "Batman" was
the only one that was intended for use on MTV.) Anyway, the
advance publicity advertised "Heretic" starring Karen Finley,
but it wasn't shown; Hill said his copy was being recut.
So either it exists, or Hill is in on the joke--to tell the
truth, he seemed like a sort of serious guy who probably
wouldn't initiate the prank at least. Might help you track
this down. ("Little Lieutenant" was really cool, BTW.)

SUBSCRIBER LIST PROBLEM
The zorn-list and zorn-list-digest had a mini-crisis
last night/this morning. During some hardware upgrades
at our host xmission.com, the subscriber list got
blown away. The owner of xmission.com replaced the
subscription list from a tape backup made on
September 6, 1996.
Luckily, I had a list backup from October 16th on
my machine. I was able to hack in (and out) the
names of people that I know subscribed and unsubscribed
in between the 16th and today.
However, it is entirely possible that I missed
someone. So if someone you know used to be getting
zorn-list mail, but isn't anymore (or vice-versa)
please have them contact me (rizzi@netcom.com).
MISSING DIGEST
While getting caught up in reading the zorn-list-digest,
I noticed that I didn't receive a copy of digest #19
at either of my computer accounts. Did anyone get a
copy of #19? Fortunately, xmission.com has a copy in
the archive directory.
So, if you did not receive digest #19 please email
me and I'll send a copy right along.
Apologies for all the fubaroo,

Hi Scott,
Mark Dresser is too one of my favorites of all time. Invocation is
very Bert Turetzky influenced and I believe he gives him credit as a
pivotal influence in his musical career on the liner notes. (Mark
was also a student of his). Bert is my favorite and is the father of
contmporary bass music which gaps classical, improv and jazz into one.
As a bored classically trained, still somewhat frightened to death to
improvise bassist, music of such composers like turetzky, as well as
Joelle Leandre, Robert Black and this disc from Dresser is very
exciting and inspirational to me. Although I must admit, Invocation
falls somewhat short for me but the track, Threnody for Charles
Mingus, makes up for anything I feel this disc lacks.
Check out some Joelle Leandre if you like this album because she kicks
ass. (Highly recommend th album Urban Bass is you can find it) She
also has a jazz trio that is pretty wacked out.

Welcome to the list. To answer your question, Zorn's people have said
pretty defintively that Masada 4 will never be reissued by itself.
However, I've heard more than one person suggest that the entire Masada
series would be repackaged as a box set for Tzadik, and that 4 would be
included in that box. Again, I can't say that that's definitely the
case, and your best bet for getting a copy is to ask someone on the Zorn
List to tape it for you. It's only about 20 minutes long, BTW, so don't
pay anybody an extortionist's fee for it.
Good luck and enjoy,

I propose a FAQ (an idea lacking originality to be sure).
The FAQ could be one line long:
Masada 4 is out of print. Good luck.
Or more info if collectively, or individually, there is some commitment.
I have unused web space I am willing to donate for it.
I am even willing to do the html.

I'm not very familiar with really early Zorn stuff, but there are three
pre-_The Big Gundown_ albums I would unhesitatingly recommend:
_Locus Solus_: DNA-influenced trio improv, including some improvised songs
vocalized by Peter Blegvad and Arto Lindsay. One of my all-time favorite
Zorn records. I believe this had been reissued on Tzadik.
_Yankees_: More traditional baseball-influenced improv with Derek Bailey
and George Lewis. I'm not sure if this is currently in print, but the
Celluloid CD seems to show up a lot.
_The Classic Guide to Strategy_: Excellent solo improv. I first heard
this one with the Tzadik reissue, and I was very pleasantly surprised by
how well Zorn sustains interest all by himself. He takes a very different
approach than one finds on other solo improv recordings. It's actually
organized similarly to many of his compositions, in that he jumpcuts from
one soundblock to another very rapidly at times, and betrays a marked Carl
Stalling influence.
Also, while it actually postdates _The Big Gundown_, you should certainly
check out the version of _Cobra_ on Hat Hut if you haven't already done
so. It's certainly the most effective recording of a game piece readily
available on CD. I assume that this has recently gone out of print, along
with most of Hat Hut's back catalogue, but it should be easy to find.
Finally, the first, self-titled Golden Palominos album on which Zorn plays
a major role, is a fantastic fusion of downtown improv with _On the
Corner_-period Miles Davis, and is not to be missed. I'm not sure if this
is available on CD.
Happy hunting,
