A hard day's walk. Details of the 15th.

The time stamp is when I took the picture, here I'm using it to show where I walked on the 15th. Taken from the ridge on the other side of the valley while following the herd on the 16th.

At around 10:00, start at the road near the spot marked "start". Walk thru the chaining and over to the beds at A. No bison have been there since I went thru with Brad. Walk around to where we saw them the second time, then up the hill a ways, don't find anything, so head back to the car. At point B, around 11:00, find fresh tracks going up the hill. Follow them up to a wide park-like area in the ponderosas, then across to the big chaining west of McMillian Springs. (the springs and campground are in the big trees at upper right).

At point C (N38°04.774' W110°51.735'), I see the herd for the first time, almost the entire way across the big chaining. I later measure this distance as 650 yards. I now have to get across this big chaining with no cover to get close enough to shoot. I drop down a ways and use some small hills for cover to get closer. Finally I get within shooting range.

I'm hot from the climb, and have taken off my coat and shirt, and am crawling bare chested thru the snow. Finding a good spot behind a rock, and checking with the binoculars, to make sure its a cow, I take a shot. It was about 150-200 yards. Nothing seems to happen. After a bit, the cow gets up and walks down to the herd, out of my view. I get up, and walk to the herd, they are just standing there looking at me. None of them seem to be injured, or are acting strange, they just ignore me. I see a cow standing by herself in between two other groups. At point D (N38°05.012' W110°51.909'), I take another shot. (later measured at 102 yards) Its about 13:00.

The entire herd then charges straight at me. I wave my arms and shout, and the turn and go around me, then run down the mountain. None lag behind.

Over where they were standing at E (N38°05.047' W110°51.956') there are two red drops in the snow. Did I hit? I thought I saw the hit thru the scope, but that rarely happens with a full power cartidge. I have to retrieve an injured animal if I can, so I start chasing the herd. They run across a meadow below the chaining, then around the mountain, back to where I pickud up thier trail, and then down the road right past the start. Harold had driven up to the campground to try to get closer to me, or they would have walked right by him.

They leave the road, and then go out towards "the beds", then past, down the mountain, and back onto the road. They follow the road all the way down to the creek in the bottom of the valley, then leave the road going up the hill on the other side.

I get to the valley bottom at 17:00, just as the sun is going down. I'm too tired to continue, so I mark the spot in the GPS (N38°03.174' W110°52.299') and call Harold to come get me. I'll get back on the trail in the morning.

I estimate about 7.5 miles of walking.
