The Vakataka Empire

The dynastic origins were in central India in the 3rd century CE. After initial expansion into contact with the Guptas, a long period of cooperation ensued.

The Gupta emperor in this period was Chandragupta II Vikramaditya. The marriage of his daughter Prabhavatigupta to the Vakataka king Rudrasena lead to her accession as regent in 390 CE, rendering this crossroads land essentially a vassal to the emperor in Patiliputra.

The Vakatakas were known as patrons of the arts and letters in this Classical period in India. The artistic and cultural influence of India spread to Central Asia, China, and most especially Southeast Asia. Peoples from Bactria to Borneo borrowed elements of Indian society and incorporated them into important aspects of their own traditions.
