Giclée
Printing 101
| "A giclée is the
closest thing a collector can have to an original...
" |
- From
an article appearing in Digital Fine Art Magazine,
"Why Artists Like Giclèes" by Jane Karlicek
|
Pronounced "zhee-clay", (La)
Giclée, the feminine noun version
of the French verb Gicler, means "that
which is sprayed or squirted." The process is
named such because
the method, first developed in 1989, involves squirting
microscopic
dots of ink onto fine
quality art paper and is considered one of the most significant
breakthroughs in digital imaging today.
This new method of creating limited
edition prints begins with a scanned copy transparency
or direct digital scan of the original work. After preparing
the digital file to match as closely to the original
as possible, a proof print is provided that
the customer approves
before
the
image
is output.
We use a professional
grade, six color Epson 10000 which uses archival quality
pigmented
inks
and an Epson
9600 with ultrachrome inks. Both produce beautiful
prints and reproductions on
a variety of high-quality paper mediums. We offer canvas,
watercolor papers and several textured fine art smooth
papers which are excellent for quality
reproductions
of
watercolors and etchings.
Additionally the prints
can be hand embellished with a brush stroke texture
which helps to lend the look and feel of
an original to a quality reproduction while offering valuable
UV protection. For pricing and further informationon on

Finally, based on accelerated aging
tests, manufacturers claim Giclée prints have a
life span of 80 to 100 years before any visible fading.
The manufacturers
fail to
mention
however,
that this is under opimum storage conditions and that these
tests should not be compared against real life conditions.
Test Prints
Giclée Prints include up to two four inch control test strips at final
output size.
Each requested test thereafter is $25.00 per test strip. Because the pigmented
inks have a smaller color gamut, some colors may not be accurately reproduced.
A consultation
with our Giclée technician before printing is
recommended.
