Henrick Evensen (a Sea Captain) and his wife were the first in Norway to
hear the LDS Missionaries and join the Church in 1850. They planned to
join the rest of the Saints in Zion but the week they were to leave his
ship sank and he was drowned within sight of his home. Serene decided to
go anyway and after much hardship (including the death of her daughter
Tomine Marie at sea) arrived in Salt Lake City with her three young sons.
After much difficulty she became the 8th plural wife of her Bishop -
Archibald Gardner in 1856. Two years later she bore him a son, two years
later twin boys, and four years after that a daughter Annie (later
married to Joseph Francis who was working at her father's mill).
