One of My Best Christmas Gifts

Christmas 2008 had a memorable event that I can share--opening my gift from my daughter Nicole, a nineteen year old college sophomore. Nicole is a creative thinker and has always had a gift at writing, art, and just about anything else she tries. Imagine my surprise when I unwrap a simple flat present to find a copy of Curious George and the Puppies modified to be Curious George and the Ebola Virus.

Well, gift opening had to stop right there as Dad got to read his new book to the rest of the family. I read through the whole thing laughing so hard that I had to stop and wipe my tears and regain my composure many times.

The new version of the story fit so well. The expressions on the faces of the Man With The Yellow Hat were so insidious. Curious George was blissfully unaware of all the despair and doom around him. This book became instantly a gem in our family treasure lore.

Since then I've shared the book with others and they always get a big kick out of it. Click here to read the book.

Nicole told me later that she came across the idea while Christmas shopping at some*Mart. She remembered seeing a book entitled Curious George and The Ebola Virus in an episode of The Simpsons and so she picked up Curious George and the Puppies and started reading. She immediately imagined the changes in the story and started laughing out loud in the store. Other shoppers seeing her laughing at a Curious George book must have thought she was crazy.

Nicole has a special fondness for Ebola because
The Hot Zone by Richard Preston, is her favorite book. This is docudrama novel about the discovery of the Ebola Virus in the 1980s.
