To Know Your Strengths

High Tech or new technology is not any easy field to understand sometimes. I was given the opportunity to attend the share holders meeting for Berkshire Hathaway Waren and Charlie were very interesting to listen to. Warren made several interesting statements one he does not invest in high tech companies because he does not understand High Tech. The other comment I found interesting this a paraphrase successful people understand their limits of ability and stay within those limits and concentrate on their core strengths.

How does this apply to technology. If you do understand high tech then It is a good idea to apply that strength. If you couple this with and understanding of your limits you will succeed. There is one added component you need to keep aptitude on the changes coming and not try and do it all.

Reading A Government Technology Digest

With my In interest in things technical and my desire to know if and when the FCC decides to drop Morse code as a licensing requirement for Amateur Radio. I subscribed to the government digest for The FCC. Some of it is as dry as the desert in summer other things are quite interesting. The things you must file with the FCC if you are a telecommunications company are interesting. I learned several things I would not have known were happening.

1. Several small communication companies asked the FCC for approval or notified that they are going to cease offering various types of phone or internet services. Due to hurricane Katrina. This never made my local news or the journals that I find time to read.

2. One telephone company was selling out its long distance fiber to another company it was more of a corporate shell game that big news but I found it interesting. Since the sellers holdings were in Utah

3. Most of the appeals to the FCC don't have merit and they say no but, some do have merit and they say yes to the portion with merit.

Reading some of what the government publishes can be interesting and it gives me a feel for what the FCC is doing for me as a taxpayer

Two sides of the Same Coin

The Sides.
Technology seem to be either very complex specialized or simple generic and limited. The hardest thing is seems to do when creating technology is finding the right balance. Those ideas that defy this norm are the tools that define the edge of the coin. Some technologies stay on the edge for years others fade like the shadows fade into the night and are forgotten.

The edge of the coin.
The tools of the edge for one person are the bane of others. This is very much sort of like sports teams some fans users cheer for whoever is in the lead while others will cheer for their favorite team that has not won a championship in almost 100 years. The best tools have a wide base of happy users one tool does not fit all. If you handed out left-hands scissors as a gift at the ball park all but the left-handed would think they were broken . It is all based on your perspective and needs. Right-handed people have no need for Left-handed tools but a left-handed person will mostly likely have a different option about how important they are...

The Consider a persons background and experience and you will begin to under stand the coin in their pocket and how it got the edge it has.
Remember if you respect their tools they will respect yours

Forget the Past... Condemn the Future

Forget the past ignore the present condemn the future. Issues of safety security and technology get decided every day by business and government. We need to know enough to know what the ramifications of those decisions will be. For example: If we don't under stand how the car works and the check oil light comes on and we just keep driving what is going to happen some of you know what the will happen because you under stand how the engine works. I don't need to know that. I start it and it just goes..... Thud it stopped and won't start why ? Open the hood for the first time I see smoke is that normal ? .... End of story is ruined engine burned up.... If we don't start to understand how things work at least at a basic level we won't know we have a problem. Our computer car or what ever may not catch fire but we could pay a heavy cost financially. When mistakes are made we tend to forget them some time and not learn from the past we just as often forget what worked and try to reinvent the wheel. Add a few corners to the wheel ok? Squares are better right?. The best solution is often the most simplistic or elegant but not always. In the next few posts I will try and expand this concept.

Other swim in the techlogy stew right to the meat while other just dip the milk toast in and think that makes them a geek. I have been swimming so long in the stew that I don't think Ill ever find all of the meat but the hunt is fun so here is the next piece of meat I will chew blog... blog... blog
