Re: MtMan-List: log cabin

Even though I enjoy getting and participating in the MM list, I am
continually amazed at how many questions are asked that could be answered
from readily available materials, like magazines and books on the subject.
The current series of Q & A's about building a log cabin is an example.
It would take many hours of typing to begin to describe the process via
e-mail. There are many-many publications that discuss this subject. And,
contrary to what some think, it is not a lost art. Here in the Ozarks
there are still people who do this. Some for tourist demonstrations and
some for nostalgia and a few for cheap buildings.
Among publications with good information is the Foxfire series. A book
that I have, and like, is by W. Ben Hunt [1888-1970], called,
appropriately enough, HOW TO BUILD AND FURNISH A LOG CABIN. He lived right
in the "in between" era and put his old fashioned knowledge to words in
this and many other books.
The Woodwright, that has a series on PBS-TV about using old tools, has
videos and books on the subject.
And even if someone could describe the process on this forum, it would be
only one style. Depending on location, avaiability of materials and
heritage there are many different techniques and styles of log cabins.
	Cheers, Frank
