This is a topic I'd like to learn more about, too.  One factoid I can
contribute is that in the account books of Ft Hall, the initial stock of
goods when Wyeth founded the fort in 1834 included alum.  Did alum serve
any other purpose at the time, or is it reasonable to assume it was
intended for tanning?  Tanning was done at the Fort by some method, as the
tanned skins were sold.
