Comparison of Futurlogics to Dr de Bono's thinking system "Six Thinking Hats"
The book "Why So Stupid? How the Human Race has Never Really Learned to Think" just arrived in the mail today September 12,2006. I bought the paperback version as It was too much money for the Hardback version. It maybe too much for the paperback version but I have only skim through it. There is no table of contents and this is how I evaluate the contents of the book with out reading it in detail. It seem to be a built in project for the intent of the book so I will defer judgment til I have read it in greater detail.
"You can analyze the past but you have to design the future" is a quote that is all on one page on page 1. This signifies that is is very important perhaps even a principle of thought. I agree with the good Doctors emphasis.

Research in the field of psychology has produced little organized knowledge of the ways in which we comprehend the future. Much of the thinking we do about the future is indirect, akin to the subconscious thought processes common to psychology in general. The reason for this is that sustained conscious thought of the future produces anxiety. This anxiety, however, is cause more from lack of a concrete design than by any reason of the abstract nature of the future.
... . Nevertheless, the greater the power our knowledge gives over our environment, the more plural the future must be envisioned. If our will is empowered with knowledge that enables us to plan and design the future as we elect, at least within reasonable limits, we tend to pluralize the future. A plural future offers choice, whereas the singular future of the absolute mode restricts volition. Strict adherence to the retrospective mode of approaching the future produces a singular future that paralyzes our will and freedom of choice.
The principle of updating and revision is that of adding to our real future and discovering our artificial future; mapping out the imaginary future; learning to distinguish the absolute, natural, and the synthetic futures. In short, it focuses the vague notions we have into hard, workable designs.
The key word to preparation is purpose. Without intent there can be no preparation. With no idea of the future we have no design or plan. The more we know, the more our acts become purposeful. Also, being prepared for the future in itself frees the mind to think further ahead, because preparation allows us more time and freedom as we enjoy the fruits of our preparedness.
We need to know what the future they would design for us looks like. By discovering how people learn and operate under the stimulus of their mental view of the future, we have also discovered that the modes of the future are many. Social engineers, like the rest of us, have their choice of any of these modes. Futurlogics would make sure that what others are doing for our good do not bring unexpected consequences.

The conflict between these two approaches to learning has led to
another method, the scientific method. It is an answer to the
incompatibility and shows a impartiality that is neutral toward the possible
moral issues underlying the two approaches of the positive and the

The concept of 'truth' that the the good Dr Edward de Bono put out in his book on pages 27 through 34 are not to my liking and I will not even deal with it; other than, quoting a scripture from the Mormon Book the Doctrine and Covenants:
D&C 93:24 24 And truth is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come;
Futurlogics is concerned with the last in the time phase of truth or things as that are to come. This the 'Blank Tablet' to develop the mind. The Doctor is still using a 'Black Board' or the "OLD SCHOOL" or relativistic truth instead of the modern new "White Boards" with many colors. Perhaps He has some other intention here but I see no sense in having 'game truth', 'experience truth', or 'belief truth'. To my way of looking at it truth is knowledge and knowledge is power. Perhaps Dr Edward de Bono is referring to 'counterfeit truth' that is accepted as the genuine. If so, then I appollogize. Deception is a grand problem to overcome!
The rest of the book concerns itself with our addiction to history and old paradigms that have seen a shift even a paradigm shift of Kuhn fame. Also there is the pursuit of 'value' instead of the pursuit of 'truth' as Dr. de Bono defines. Then the final wrapping up of the book presents an ending list of thinking needs to accomplish the thinking transformation; and this puts the whole book into the catagory of a proposal and a plea to change our historical thinking to the new design/value seeking type of thinking.

Today we have seen the results of invention and scientific research. New ideas are welcomed, more than they have been at any time in history. The attitude that new discoveries are useful, and not a threat, has changed us for the better. We know now that all ways of learning are of value if they produce results.
The negative approach suggest that existing knowledge is best and new ideas are admitted only after passing a test. This certification by proof implies lesser value of the new, and sets up a block between the new and the old.

Anyone who is at all interested in the future will have some degree of commitment to a plan since all plans have something to do with the future. Most people have a difficult time finding value in the abstract, and the future is seen by many as largely abstract. Value is found in the hardware of everyday reality. tomorrow is a dream that may never come. With this attitude commitment to the future is more difficult and not as enduring.

Conclusion: This book was not worth the money I payed for it. However the Edward de Bono's fans will see it as a finishing summary of all his work and it can be seen as a call to all who want to go to the next level of thinking by using the minds reaction to/with future by newthinking system(s) he proposes.
If I were to see someone struggling with the value of the future as a developmental technique I would have them read this book before getting to the real principle found in the FUTURLOGICS.

The last parting comment is that the book 'Why So Stupid?' pays due
attention to the minds ability to perceive or there is the mental/mind
activity of perception. Everything in FUTURLOGICS is setup to acheive
DMP, which is Intuition and Insight or (D)irect (M)ind (P)erception and
(D)irect (M)ental (P)rocess, which functionally in the camp of perception
of the mind.
Yes there is a review of "The Six Thinking Hats" which presents as an example of parallel thinking vs argument style of thinking.
