Infrastructure
Gastown is located in XMission, Utah's premium Internet service provider. XMission's access to the Net provides your customers and friends with easy access to your pages. There are no transfer charges (per-MB or per-hit) and no per-page update fees. The tradeoff for this low-risk, low cost environment is that graphics may load more slowly during peak periods as the site manages the shared load.
This virtual town is small and simple. It doesn't have a big sign on the Highway, but assistance is available to help local businesses and publications show up on net-wide indexes. If you have a large number of files, need to update your pages more frequently, or need advanced technical support, you may want your own account with XMission, which has very affordable rates.
Since Gastown Webspace is an affordable suburb of XMission, we cannot guarantee levels of access. Take advantage of the free trial period to decide if Gastown Webspace will meet your needs. In the event of problems with the files or directories, The Mayor will ensure that you are treated fairly.
Building Permits US$20 initial fee
To move into Gastown you need a building permit. This covers the cost of naming a street after you (a set of directories), and updating the Gastown home page with your description and a link to your index page. Your pages will be briefly tested when your deposit is received before your URL link on the Gastown home page is created, but you should ensure that your files do not contain any HTML problems or links to dead-ends.
If you want The Mayor to upload your files from diskettes (Mac/DOS/NeXT formats) send one to the address below for a free initial upload. NOTE: Backup services are not included -- keep copies of all files!
Property Taxes
Monthly fees are required to keep the streets paved and to pay the levies of the City of XMission (whose by-pass allows you reach Gastown from the Highway). Service begins when your link is established on the Gastown index page.
You will be sent an e-mail message showing the date your service began. If you decide to move out, your service will be ended as of the month that your e-mail is received and your remaining deposit will be refunded.
Personal, Business or Organizational: US$7 per month
Many files, many images (user-updateable several times per day). First 1 MB of storage included. Multi-line listing (max. 255 chars) with small icon on the Gastown Webspace home page. Make your own imagemaps!
Extra storage space
Additional storage is available for US$2/MB/month for the first extra 4 MB, then US$1/MB/month thereafter. Residents leasing extra space can request their own own private outgoing FTP directory.
Making Payments
The minimum deposit is equal to your building permit plus 6 months of monthly taxes. You will be sent an e-mail message when your payment is received and when your account only has enough funds to cover one more month of service. If you move out of Gastown, your balance will be refunded. Deposits may be made in Canadian or other currencies, and will be converted to $US on the date received to determine the amount credited to your account. Accounts in arrears will be warned that their URL link may be removed, and accounts outstanding for more than one month will have the files deleted.
By-laws and Ordinances
Gastown is a small, quiet town. The Mayor expects residents and businesses to keep the following guidelines in mind:
- No 'monster' houses or ugly storefronts. Keep images and sounds small, and make your descriptions concise and readable. Use some variety in your documents to make them reader-friendly, but remember that many users still have text-only viewers.
- No vulgar or criminal material (or links thereto). Gastown is open to kids, families, and people of various ethnicities and world-views. Every society has its limits, and The Mayor reserves the right to refuse building permits for pages containing objectionable material.
- Bona-fide businesses only. Multi-Level Marketing dealers are welcome, but pyramid schemes and similar offerings will not be granted building permits. Product claims must be supported upon request, if necessary, to maintain residency.
- Re-selling or charging others for advertising is permitted within the guidelines outlined in the FAQ page. The Mayor reserves the right to make a final determination about your account status based the content and size of your pages.
