Think about this, the next time you hear some Republican complaining about some trivial amount of "government waste" - because, basically, anything measured in the millions or below is just pocket change in the grand scheme of things. Bernie Sanders wanted to implement free college for all. Pretty much everyone else laughs at this idea - including most Democrats. They all assume that it would cost way too much money. But note this: Best estimates are that it would cost about $30 billion/year. Well, that's a lot of money (at least to me, maybe not to Bill Gates or the Koch brothers, but I digress). But if we reduced the defense budget by 5%, we'd have our $30 billion. That it, just 5%. Surely, we could do that if we wanted to. We may not want to, but we certainly could - and nothing bad would result from doing so. So, I'm proposing a new unit of measure. If somebody complains about the government spending, say, $13 million/year, remember that that's really just 0.0014% of the defense budget (currently $900 billion/yr and always growing). So, instead of saying "13 million dollars", people will just say "0.0014%". There, that's much better.
