Benito Mussolini: Profile of a Dictator

The Model Dictator
Mussolini's methods and behaviors were being watched, analyzed and scrutinized by other aspiring dictators. In particular, Adolf Hitler, Chancellor of Germany.

Before meeting Mussolini, Hitler was so enthralled by him that he requested an autograph of the Italian leader, which, much to Hitler's dismay, was declined. This refusal, however, did not thwart Hitler's desire to meet and become well aquainted with his idol and eventually the two men became associates appearing in public to be great friends and allies. It would seem that this feeling was genuine on the part of Adolf Hitler, but was not shared by Mussolini, who could not say enough bad things in private about his German counterpart.

As the war came to a close, Hitler did much to help Mussolini, including rescuing him from a mountain retreat where the war-weary Italians were holding him captive. Hitler also showed respect for his failing idol by setting Mussolini up as the head of a "puppet state" in Northern Italy.
