R
ocks in this county are mostly sedimentary and as such there are several good opportunities for fossil hunting.

Popular Locations

Location: Dry Lake Area
Fossils:

horn coral, brachiopods

Land Status: Highway right-of-way.
Directions: This location is north of Sardine Summit overlooking the Dry Lake area, just before Milepost 11. Look in the roadcuts.

Location: High Creek
Fossils:

trilobites, eocrinoids, and others

Land Status: National Forest.
Directions: The turnoff to High Creek Canyon is about 1.5 miles north of Richmond and is marked by a Forest Service sign reading "Campground 6 miles, Trailhead 8 miles." Follow the road to the trailhead. The Spence Shale crops out in a band that crosses the ridge between the South Fork trail and the North Fork trail.

Location: Lodgepole Limestone
Fossils:

crinoids, brachiopods, corals, bryozoans

Land Status: National Forest.
Directions: This formation is accessble in many different locations. Some of the easiest to get to are in side canyons in lower Logan Canyon. It crops out about 0.5 miles up Spring Hollow, Mill Hollow and Beirdneau Hollow.

Location: Lucky Star Mine
Minerals:

quartz, limonite after pyrite, dolomite, malachite, azurite, galena, silver

Land Status: National Forest.
Directions: From Hyrum, take Utah Highway 101 up Blacksmith Fork toward Hardware Ranch. near milepost 13 turn left onto the gravel road going up the Left Hand Fork. About 5.6 miles up this road is an intersection with the road to the left going up Cowley Canyon. Stay right and about 0.8 mile further you will come to Gray Cliff Spring. The mine dump is located about 2.1 miles past this spring. If you reach another large spring you have gone to far. The dump is also not visible from the road. It is marked by few debris piles, containing quartz crystals, along the roadside.

Location: Spring Hollow Area
Fossils:

brachiopods

Land Status: National Forest.
Directions: Go up Logan Canyon about 6 miles to the reservoir and campground at Spring Hollow. Go up Spring Hollow to an elevation of about 6000 feet (bring altimiter or use topo and best guess) and search the rocks on both sides of the hollow in this vicinity.
GPS: 41°44'40"N - 111°42'18"W

Location: Water Canyon Formation
Fossils:

fish

Land Status: National Forest.
Directions: There are several areas that this formation is exposed. In Water Canyon, a tributary of Green Canyon. In Logan Canyon in the vicinity of the hydro-electric plant. In Logan Canyon between Card Campground and Brown's Roll Off.
Notes: Collecting of vertebrate fossils is restricted. Check with the Forest Service or State Paleontologist for permits.
