A
lmost entirely made up of Mesozoic sandstone formations, Kane County yields fossils, agate and petrified wood. Best known for deposits of septarian nodules.

Location: Alton Area
Rock:

Land Status: BLM
Directions: About 14 miles south of Panguitch on highway 89 is the turnoff to Alton. Follow this road into Alton. Turn left on 100 south in Alton and follow to the end of the pavement to a dirt road on the right. Follow this road 1.4 miles to another dirt road on the right. Follow this road for 4.1 miles and park. You will be in a hill area between two gates. The hillsides on both sides of the road are littered with broken pieces of the nodules. Some digging should yield some larger and perhaps whole nodules.

Location: Grosvenor's Arch Area
Fossils: pelecypods, petrified wood
Land Status: BLM.
Directions: The road to Kodachrome Basin State Park and Grosvenor Arch leaves U-12 in Cannonville east of Bryce Canyon National Park.

Location: Mt. Carmel Junction
Fossils:

crinoid

Land Status: BLM and private lands
Directions: Mt. Carmel junction is the junction of U-9 out of Zion National Pakr with U.S. 89. Look for the fossils in a limestome outcrop here.

Location: Muddy Creek Area
Rock:

septarian nodules

Land Status: Mining claims.
Directions: These areas are all under claim by Wiley Berry of Tetla Septarians and Joe's Rock Shop, both in Orderville. Claimholders have always been willing to allow the public to collect on the sites and no fees have been charged in the past. Get permission and directions from claim holders at their businesses in Orderville before collecting.

Location: Old Paria

Land Status: BLM
Directions: From Kanab, drive east on highway 89 for 33.6 miles. Just beyond a historical marker at this point, a road branches left to Old Paria. It is about 5 miles to the Old Paria site. Search the purple and gray mud hills and the gravel patches on the hills.

Location: Seaman Wash

Fossils: petrified wood
Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Approximately 15.7 miles east of Kanab on U.S. 89 is a gravel road leading north into Seaman Wash and Petrified Hollow.

Location: Straight Cliffs
Rock:

Fossils: petrified wood
Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Drive east out of Escalante on Utah highway 12 just over 4 miles to the Hole in the Rock Road. Turn right on this road and follow it for 17 miles to the Garfield-Kane county line. Any of the roads leading to the right after this point will probably get you over into the hills where the material can be collected. Look in the ledges near the tops of hills as well as in the washes.
