amous for Dinosaur National Monument, there are a number of interesting fossil bearing locations in the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments here.

Popular Locations

Location: Threemile Canyon
Fossils:

algal stromatolites

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Go south of Bonanza on Utah highway 45 approximately 17 miles to Evacuation Creek. Continue on Highway 45 down Evacuation Creek about 2 miles to the mouth of Threemile Canyon. Turn right into the canyon and go approximately 1.9 miles to the Black Virgin Gilsonite Mine on the north side of the road.

Location: Brush Creek
Fossils:

cephalopods, (belemnites), pelecypods, gastropods, coral

Land Status: National Forest
Directions: Take Utah highway 44 north from Vernal for 9 miles and note the geologic age markers along side the road. Watch for a sign labeled "Curtis Formation" and a gravel road leading east to Brush Creek. Belemnites can be found by searching in small washes to the right of the gravel road about one mile from the highway and further along to the Forest Service sign past the cattle guard.

Location: Jensen Area
Fossils:

sharks teeth

Land Status: Private.
Directions: Cross the river east of Jensen and immediately turn north on a paved road. About 0.25 mile up the road, park and lcimb to the top of a small hill on your right. The hill is capped with sandstone and ant hills in this area contain sharks teeth.
