T
he Wasatch Mountains of Weber County are made up of Precambrian age metamorphic rock and Paleozoic sediments.

Popular Locations

Location: The Oaks
Fossils:

plants, gastropods, bryozoans, brachiopods, crinoid, corals

Land Status: National Forest.
Directions: Beginning at the stoplight at Harrison Boulevard and 12 south Street in Ogden, drive east up Ogden Canyon to the Oaks on the left (north) side of the canyon. Search the borrow pit area and the talus.

Location: Pineview Dam
Minerals:

calcite

Land Status: Highway right-of-way.
Directions: Drive up Ogden Canyon and turn left across the dam at Pineview reservoir. Park along the highway where space permits, and walk along the roadcuts watching for white nodules in the rock.

Location: Camp Kiesel Area
Minerals:

calcite, manganese minerals

Fossils: brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids
Land Status: National Forest.
Directions: Take Utah highway 39 along the south side of Pineview Reservoir, through Huntsville, and up the valley of the South Fork of the Ogden River until you reach the turnoff for Causey Reservoir and Camp Kiesel. Follow this road along the west side of Causey Reservoir to the lake headwaters near the boy scout camp. Outcrops of the Lodgepole formation are found above the public toilets in this area.

Location: Monte Cristo
Fossils:

brachiopods, gastropods, corals

Land Status: National Forest.
Directions: Take Utah highway 39 from Huntsville east and north to Monte Cristo. The location is just after passing under the power lines in the Littel Monte area.
