--- Rushmore '97 ---

On my way to Cornell in Ithaca, New York, I decided to head up to South Dakota and see Mount Rushmore. What an incredible sight! It was much bigger than I had expected. Well worth the extra miles it added to the long trip.

It was very foggy as I drove up the last stretch of road to the mountain. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to see the faces of the presidents. However, just as I got there, the fog started to dissipate! It was as if it were parting just for me! (596x397 57Kb jpeg)

Take a close look at the large image (click on the image to enlarge). This picture should give you a good idea of just how big those president's heads are! (600x400 322Kb jpeg)

This is as close as I could get to the presidents. They had built a wooden walkway all the way from the visitors center to this spot (about 1/2 mile). It was surrounded with trees and squirrels were running around everywhere. (397x596 97Kb jpeg)

A lot of rubble came off the mountain to create the presidents faces. Here's a clear shot of what used to be on the mountain. (597x397 62Kb jpeg)
