Jeans to attend his illness Powell, James - drowned at Platte river crossing - body never recovered, age 18 Deseret News, August 19, 1868 Letter from: Muddy Station, August 15, 1868 Dear Brother, Having a few leisure moments, as we have just camped for noon, I take this opportunity of writing to you. This is the first time we have struck the stage road since leaving the Platte, so our opportunities for sending letters have been limited. I am happy to say the health of the Saints is as good as could be expected; through the changes of food and water a few are troubled with dysentery, but none are dangeroulsy ill. One or two of the sisters are pretty low through old age, but they are improving. At Green River, we left bro. J.J. Jeans, who had been ill for several days, with something like the pleurisy; his wife stopped with him. Bro. Louis robinson was very kind and said he would do what he could to bring him around. While fording the Platte, one of the young brethern by the name of James Powell, aged 18, went too far down the riffle, which was contrary to the Captain's order, the water being rapid; he stepped on a stone, so those say that saw him fall, and fell, the current taking him into deep water, before any assistance could be rendered by those on the bank or the edge of the water. His body was searched for, but could not be found. After corssing the Platte we turned off the main road, and came by Rolling Springs; the road was pretty good, with some sand in places. We struck the Sweetwater 10 miles above the devil's Gate. Both trains have been traveling near each other. All the way up the Sweetwater the feed and camping places were excellent, there being no traveling along that way to eat off the feed. The Saints are feeling well, and so far, have enjoyed their journey across the plains, and we all fell to thank the Lord for his preserving care in bringing us safe thus far toward our Mountain Home. I remain, your brother in the Gospel, Zebulon Jacobs. William S. We left New York on Saturday 7:30 PM and arrived at this place (Albany, NY) the morning following. The greater portion of our little company, having been detained at New York on account of sickness, have much improved, but yet, more or less suffer from weakness. Through careful attendance and our united faith, we trust all will be sufficiently strengthened by the Lord to reach our friends and destined home. Yours respectfully, F.C. Anderson Deseret News, October 23, 1868 Echo - Oct. 22 -Will camp near Grass Creek to-night. We expect to reach the city on Saturday. F.C. Anderson Deseret News, October 24, 1868 The immigrants who were detained behind by sickness got in today about 11 o'clock, with the teams sent for them. They were about 60 in number and wre in charge of Elder F.C. Anderson, returning missionary. One died coming into the city; two are still sick; the rest in good health and spirits. Deseret News, October 28, 1868 Called: - We received a call this morning from Elder F.C. Anderson, just returnied from a mission to Europe. elder Anderson left Utah in May 1865, reached Liverpool in the early part of August and was appointed to labor in the Scandinavian mission. a few months afterwards he was appointed to preside over the Edinburgh Conference, and subsequently over the Bristol Conference; where he continued until last May, when he was released to return home. On arriving in New York he assisted in forwarding the various companies of emigrants to the terminus and was afterwards left to look after those who were detained, through sickness at Ward's Island hospital. The company were released from the hospital on the 3rd inst. (Oct) and started for the terminus, arriving there on the 13th, being rreated with marked respect and consideration by the railway officials along the entire line. One of his company named Christian Petersen, was unavoidably left behind at New York. He had the misfortune to break his leg while crossing the Atlantic on board the Emerald Isle and though in a fair way of recovery, it was not deemed prudent for him to rish the journey this season.
