Not so Vital Datum

Me in 1980

Me 20 years ago in 1980.

I was first, a blue and white eagle with our arch rivals being the purple buffalo. When we moved when I went to high school, we became died in the fur, red and white Rabbits, with our nemesis being of all things, blue and white eagles. When I went to college I flopped again, switching loyalties back to blue and white cougars, oddly enough the worst rivalry of all were red and white Indians. At this point I'm not switching colors again, ever! I enjoy Mormon History, having been born only 3 miles from Fort Bridger. I also enjoy basketball, I referee and play the game, even as I approach the mid century mark. (slowly approach that is.)

I enjoy many interests such as photography. I sold my camera to buy my fiancee a wedding ring and have not owned a SLR since, even though I have a degree in communications photography.

I have owned a PC since 1984, I am currently a data base programmer, and am enjoying taking a class in c++, ok lets update that and make it C, the OOP of C++ at this point is a C - - to me.

I enjoy tinkering with my 3 (soon to be 4) computers at home. I recently, this last Xmas got a Pentium, the other computers are worthless and are rarely turned on.

So if none of this sounds like me, you may still have the right guy, because over the last 5 years I have had more Opera seasons tickets than football or basketball seasons tickets. It is cheaper to scalp good seats than to buy them. My brother and I got 50 yard line tickets to the Notre Dame game for 17 bucks a piece.

See family photo that was taken the day I signed my divorce papers.

I am thinking very seriously of skipping my 25 year class reunion, even though compared to most, my life has only improved since high school.  [At that time, Renee and I determined that we would be getting divorced, things were in the works, but slow.  I did not want to go to my class reunion alone, or have the only topic of any of my discussion, our divorce.  I was  wrong, most just wanted to talk about the good old days and few asked about Renee.]

This is the questionnaire for the reunion that I filled out.

Your Name, (and Spouse):   Perry L. Porter  Hummmm, and for now Renee Call Porter.

Your Address & E-Mail address: 365 North 1000 East Orem, Utah 84097  plporter@pobox.com

Your Telephone, #  801-225-7041

How many children to you have?   4 living, once deceased. Ages 19, 17, 15, (7) and 5.

How many Grandchildren do you have?  Better have NONE!

You might want to enlighten us on the, joys of grandparenting, hoping that it is at least 5 years away or more.  Face Lifts or Tummy Tucks or hair Replacement?  That funny font you used, caused my scanner to pick up "flair" not "Hair".  Which makes a better question.  So to answer that question, Yes I have had a flair replacement, everyone wants to jump to the conclusion that it is a mid life crisis.  Well, if it is, I'm setting a record, because some changes have been going on for 15 years and others for 24, read on.

Your Occupation:  Student, I was a School teacher at a reform school for 7 years, then a computer programmer for 15 years, and I am coming full circle again as a student at the Utah Collage of Massage Therapy in Lindon, Utah.

Your Hobbies:  I have been active on the Internet for the last 8 years.  I had access to it at work, when the Internet was REALLY new, over 12 years ago, but didn't know how addicting it was back then.  I have a 100 Gallon salt water reef tank.  We have 8 computers in our house, 4 of which are networked together, the 3 of them I never turn on anymore.  I was a high school Basketball Referee for 7 years.  2 years ago I call a technical on a guy for hanging on the rim, at Provo High, the hammer head dunk was awesome, but the hot dogging on the rim, caused me to instinctively blow the whistle. Fans, player and coaches from both teams were booing me, the place was packed with about 400 people booing me.  I am currently pulling a 4.0 in my school classes, so getting good grades is my newest hobby, as well as learning all the muscles and body parts at the BYU cadaver lab.

What has been my greatest achievement in the, last 25 years:  I play basket ball year round, in fact I scored over 30 points in a game this last year.  However, basketball is not entirely aerobic so at 41 I started weight lifting for the first time in my life. Between 2 years of fairly consistent weight training, (except for a 6 moth lay off because of tennis elbow) and kick boxing that I started 6 moths ago, on our 20th weeding anniversary I fit into vest and tight "angle flight" hip hugger pants that I wore to our reception.  The vest was tight was because of new muscle, not old fat.  I am still stuck at 5" 8", but weigh 143 pounds, and have less than 10% body fat.  At the last Nu Skin wellness test, I did 38 Push ups in 60 seconds and 48 sit ups in 60 seconds.  I'm thinking that isn't too bad for one of the oldest kids in the class, that never wrestled or played football because they were too skinny.

Probably my greatest accomplishment was helping a friend with his web page, and now he has gotten more than 127525 hits since Aug. 1996.  Mine only gets about 7,000 per year, but it is more limited in scope.  I have also created and maintained e-mail support groups for people with specific family issues.  Also I have written about 8 chapters of what may become a book someday.  See one of those chapters at: http://www.xmission.com/~plporter/christy.htm  I will not be making it to the reunion, so this is a little long since it might be the only thing you see of me for the next 10 years.

What has been the greatest invention in the last 25 years that has made, a difference to you?  Hands down, it would be the Personal computer, followed by the Internet.

When we grow up, what do you want to be? (If we grow up) Healthy and happy.

Have you or anyone in your family become famous?  Well 3 of the most significant books on Mormon history, in the last 40 years, mention me by name in the acknowledgments.  My contributions to these volumes, were small, but the support of the author must have meant something to them.

Renee, is the payroll analyst for the City of Provo.

They say "Life begins at 40" is that true?  I love weight lifting, and that started after 40.  I also enjoy all the praise I receive when I help someone feel better when I give them a massage.  I didn't start my own mailing list or web page until I was almost 40.  I didn't become a GUI programmer until after 40.  I have done a lot of things after 40, such as a cruise, that I never did before 40.

Wouldn't you just love to see the, Guy or Gal that you went to Jr. Prom?  If anyone is interested in how I look pretty much the same, I'll post a current photo at:

http://www.xmission.com/~plporter/perry.htm

Who in our class has changed the most in the, last 25 years?  If you are talking something other than physically, I would give that a run for the money, but I will not elaborate, my parents are still alive.  ;)  [This was a veiled reference to my impending divorce]

Who in our class has aged the, best in the last 25 years?  Well other than a few wrinkle lines around my eyes, from staring at computer screens, for the last 18 year, my face is pretty much the same, and my body in some ways is younger and defiantly stronger than before.  In High school I would be lucky to do 8 push ups without cheating.

Do you miss, Delta?  Like I used to say about Lyman Wyoming, it is a good place to be FROM!  I have never seriously thought of moving to Delta as I prefer a larger city.

Was it a good place, to grow up?   In all honesty, I couldn't think of a better place for ME to have grown up.  I owe most of what I have accomplished, education wise and career wise, to Nancy Conent and Fay J. Jacobson!  As proof, I have been employed in the computer industry, making good money for the last 15 years, and the last math class I took was commercial math in 11th grade.  I did well enough on the ACT to never have to take any math classes at BYU.

Delta, Utah, a Pretty Great, Place to be from!

I wrote this for my 20th year Class reunion, Class of 74.

Perry Porter, I have been a computer programmer, for the past 8 years the last 3 years at Dynix, a library automation company. It is a 4 minuet bike ride from my house at 365 North 1000 East Orem, Utah Perry NuSkin work Photo 199884057 (801)-225-7041.

This July is my 20th year High School Class reunion. This is a Bio that I sent in.

Renee Call Porter married me on Valentines day in Manti in 1979. We had our 1st daughter 9 months later, how is that for timing. Renee is the payroll clerk for Provo City & a former President of the Provo City Employees association.

Tiscia Renee Porter will be in 9th grade at Canyon View Jr. High next year and then on to Orem High the next year. She is doing well in school, she got one A-, the rest were A's. Her clogging group received a 1st palace a few weeks ago at Lagoon.

Steven Markham Porter, our second, has a very high IQ, but mostly uses it to get out of work rather than putting it to work. His teacher this year is the Young Astronauts advisor. Steve loves space camp and will be going for his first week long stay.

James Orrin Rockwell Porter is now 10 playing little league and has caught 6 or more fly balls. He jumped high and caught one with the tip of his glove and fell back on the ground, it was the third out, at the end of the game, he could tell that he had caught the ball and he flopped to the ground totally relieved. After the game he asked the coach how did he like his play of the day. I had to give him a little talk on humility afterwards. Hardly sounds like a Platts, now does he. Steve and Jim spent most of there time bickering when not fighting over computer games.

Christy Lynne Porter was born with hypo-plastic left heart syndrome on June 1st at U of U hospital 1992, she lived for 10 days. The Trees next to Christy Lynne's grave were undisturbed from last months storm that uprooted over 100 trees in the Provo cemetery.

Mary Elizabeth Porter was born just four days short of a 1993 tax break. We are readjusting to a new baby in the house. All of our babies have had chubby cheeks, so far all have grown out of them. Now if you have not heard, Mary Elizabeth is named after our her Great, great, great aunt (James Henry Rollins's brother) Mary Elizabeth Rollings Lightner (Smith, as in Joseph).

I have worked for Dynix for 3 years. When I stared in the Scholar division there were 10 people and now there are over 60. My favorite aspect of work is my Internet access.

One of my other passions that takes some of my spare time and energy, is Basketball. I play in the morning 3 days a week, 52 weeks a year. This year will start my forth year as a certified High school Referee, 2 weeks ago I refereed two Utah Summer Games, with two teams made up of former and current BYU Basketball players, that was great fun and a real challenge, but I was able to keep my objectivity, even though I was a season ticket holder for over 10 years, and don't miss a game on TV. The fouls were 9 to 2 against the BYU team, and when they whined I just snapped back, "then don't push!" Hard to believe I would treat my idols so curtly.

BTW I am an avid BYU Football fan, having Season tickets for 15 years, Two years ago the cougar club had expanded so that our seasons tickets put us on the second to top row and 4 seats form the end zone. We dropped our season tickets, and my brother, J. and I scalp tickets before each game and get better tickets than the season tickets would be. We even got 50 yard line tickets to the Notre Dame game and paid $2.00 less than the printed price on the ticket.

My interest in Utah history had been has been renewed lately as a I have attended various symposia lately, most recently the Mormon History Association, in Park City.

I am currently President of the Utah Count Chapter of the Utah State Historical Society. I figure that I was elected because I am awake at the end of the meetings and am most likely to be alive till the end of the year. I feel honored to have such a position, because many past presidents are professors.

I spend an hour or so each day reading and responding to electronic bulletin board messages that deal with Mormon Women topics, Mormon History, and General Mormon issues. I have done more writing on e-mail lists in the last 9 months, than I have in the previous 38 years. There are some people out there that just love what I write and others that hate my guts, but such is life in Cyber space. A co-worker that is on one of the same list, mentioned that I must be the most popular person in the list, but fame is fleeting, a few weeks ago an E-mail person responded to a comment of mine and referred to me as Mr. Perry. Oh well.
