RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
Lab Assistant: Department of Cellular, Molecular, and Viral Biology, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. Supervisor: Dr. Paul Nicholes, 1979 - 1981. Performed quality control testing of surgical masks using aerosolized Staphylococcus aureus. Devised a method for qualitative and quantitative examination of cattle feed for Aspergillus niger. Conducted qualitative and quantitative examination of bulk sugar samples used in the beverage industry for molds. Pursued investigations into the causes of virulence in Francisella tularensis, which included maintenance of bacterial colonies, cell wall and protein harvesting and characterization, animal inoculation, sacrifice and examination, and analysis of data.

Research Associate: Department of Chemistry, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Supervisor: Dr. Susan V. Olesik, September 1987 - August 1993. Dissertation work included an assessment of new stationary phases for supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), NMR studies of the behavior of surfactants and reverse micelles at high pressure in liquids (devised a new high pressure NMR sample system for these experiments), and the separation behavior of sulfur-containing polymers in supercritical fluid chromatography. Studied the diffusion of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in supercritical fluids. Established theoretical underpinnings of study. Built instrumentation for study which included using supercritical extraction, supercritical fluid chromatography, and fluorescence detection. Examined conditions for optimization of flame ionization detector performance during supercritical fluid chromatography as compared to gas chromatography.

Instructional Resources Coordinator: Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. September 1993 - December 1999. Directly responsible for the hiring, training, management, and technical advisement of student employees and annual budgets in excess of $25,000; extensively involved in administration of annual hardware budget . Pioneered and championed the web-based delivery of instructional material within the department. Instrumental in developing animations of chemical reactions and principles. Studied and pursued the creation and distribution of instructional materials via streaming media. Created graphics and images pertinent to General Chemistry that could be freely used on the world wide web without fear of copyright violation. Extensively involved in the establishment of the department web site. Web master from 1996 - 1999. Responsible for over-all site design and content, "Fair Use" issues, security, and also for supervising and providing for the web-based needs of nearly 40 faculty and 60 graduate students. Served as ex officio faculty liaison with departmental and university computer personnel to ensure that faculty and student computing requirements were met. Created and maintained "The Chemical Demonstration Page," a nationally and internationally recognized web-based literature review of chemical demonstrations.

Industrial Hygienist: Utah Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Salt Lake City, Utah. Supervisor: Robert Dreman, June 1985-April 1987; September 1981 - March 1984. Participated in over 250 detailed on-site industrial hygiene inspections of work sites to assess hazardous chemical or noise exposures, including airborne chemical sampling and noise monitoring. Assessed employer hazard communication programs. Instructed courses at employers request on hazards of various chemicals and use of personal protective equipment to employees.
