Sculpting Clay
by Special Effect Supply

There are two basic kinds of sculpting clay, Oil Based Clay and Water Based Clay. All Oil based clay is sulfer free.

Klean Clay is fading away.

You probably heard rumblings in the industry that our Klean Clay is being discontinued.
These rumors are true. The old gentleman who made it is retiring. He has sold his
equipment and formulas to a friendly competitor. We are working with the new owners to
get the new clay. We should have the replacement for Klean Clay soon. It will not exactly
be the same, but it will be sulfur free. It will most likely cost more money. Thanks for
your patience during this transition. SB

Oil Based Clay

Oil based clay is clay mixed with some kind of oil or combinations of oil. It will not dry out, but it will oxidize over time and become difficult to work. Sometimes you can manipulate the consistency of the clay by mixing it with petroleum jelly, but this is hard work. Some oil based clays like plastina contain sulfur and can't be used with silicone molding compounds. Plastina can be sealed with a coating of sealer or shellac but any coating of this type will take away some of the character of the clay. We recommend and use an industrial tooling clay which is easy to work and won't react with silicones. Some oil based clays can be melted and poured into a mold. Preheating oil based clay will soften it and make it easy to work. A pound of Klean clay is about 3 3/4" x 7/8" x 5 3/8."

Original Sculpey 1.75 lbs. (794 gm.)

Original Sculpey is the modern modeling compound that stays permanently pliable at room temperature. It's non-toxic, smooth, non-sticky, non-staining, and won't shrink. When placed in an ordinary home oven at 275°F (130°C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness, it becomes permanently hard, and won't crack, chip, or crumble. After baking, Sculpey Modeling Compound can be sanded, carved, rebaked, and painted with acrylic paint or other water-based colors. Glaze the baked surface with Sculpey Glaze.

Instructions are included. Two colors are available, White and Terra Cotta. Made in the USA.

Oven Bake Polymer Clay

Sculpey III clay has the same excellent handling qualities of Sculpey and Super Sculpey, combined with the dimension of color. It bakes to hardness in a 275 degree Fahrenheit oven in 15 to 20 minutes. A finish can be applied with Sculpey Glaze in either gloss or matte. Sculpey III is an excellent medium for jewelry, maquettes and miniatures. Once baked, its hardness makes it great for making a two-part silicone mold. The bars are small so pay attention to the 2 oz (56g) size. Dimensions of each bar are about 1 3/4" x 3/4" x 2 1/4"

Water Based Clay

Water based clay is simply that, clay mixed with water. It is usually very inexpensive but must be kept covered or it will dry out. Water based clay is easy to work when it has just the right amount of water, which is easy to manipulate. It is easy to remove from a mold with a water sprayer. Its disadvantages are equal to its advantages; it is often hard to control especially if a project goes into many days, it sags and separates easy, and it can't be used with plastics, epoxies or polymers.

Crayola White Air Dry Clay

Crayola Air-Dry Clay is a fine, natural white earth clay that air-dries to a hard solid. No kiln or oven necessary! Easy to use with traditional modeling techniques, it's also a snap to clean up.

Smoother, finer and less sticky than traditional clay; needs no oven or kiln.
Softens easily with water and quickly cleans from hands and surfaces.
Use with traditional techniques such as pinch, coil, slab, and score-and-weld; make stamped impressions or beads; embed found objects.
Can be painted with tempera, acrylic or watercolors when dry.
Resists cracking.
Convenient reusable plastic bucket helps keep clay fresh.
Also available in a 25 lb. Value Pack.

Mexican Pottery Clay

Mexican Pottery Clay will shrink during drying, so it is best to hollow out bulky sculptures or wrap a slab of clay around a loose crumpled paper armature before modeling.
Allow the finished piece to dry slowly and evenly on all sides at room temperature and away from heat until hard. When piece is completely dry, decorate with AMACO Rub 'n Buff, school paints, temperas, acrylics or liquid crayons.
After decorating, it is a good idea to coat with shellac or varnish to seal it and make it water resistant.
