Windows 3.1 Startup Screens
and how Steev changes them
Updated May 27, 1998
The procedure is rather simple and only requres that the startup screen image be emeded into the "WIN.COM" file.
Steev basically lets windows do it for him. Just follow the instructions below and you'll be on your way.
Warning #1: This is only applicable to Windows 3.1.
Warning #2: If you are using an alternate video driver other then the one supplied with windows then you may need to make some adjustments to the second part of the procedure. Since Steev can't account for any configuration other then his own, he can't help it if the procedure doesn't work for you.
I. Prepare your startup screen image
- Well, the first thing you need to do is make sure you have a 16 color .BMP file saved as an RLE4 format.
- Rename the file to "VGALOGO.RLE".
- Backup the file "VGALOGO.RLE" that is currently in the \windows\system directory.
- Place your new "VGALOGO.RLE" file in the \windows\system directory.
II. Install the image into the "WIN.COM" file
- If you haven't already, exit from windows to a DOS prompt.
- Run the windows Setup program located in the \windows directory.
- In the section that selects display modes select a different mode.
- With out exiting the setup program re-select the previous display mode you had. (Thus fooling the setup program into generatin a new WIN.COM file with your new image in it.)
- Now quit the Setup program by allowing it to "make the changes".
- When you re-start windows you should see your new startup screen.
