GADABOUT NEWS August 2007

The Gadabout club will have new officers for 2008. I have served for over 20 years, and been in charge of over 100 events, so it's time for me to step down. I will continue to serve when ever possible, and will ensure that the club remains active and able to host great events, but we will have new leaders deciding where we walk and working the events. I will be able to manage the club website and financial reports until the new officers are appointed. So I pledge to you that the club will still be viable. And I thank you for your friendship and support and being such a great part of my life for the past 20 years. May you all be blessed with good health and a desire to keep walking!

Thanks for the great support of the American Cancer Society 10K/all night event. The Gadabout club raise over $600 for pledges and auction items. Special thanks to Troy Nielsen from the Enchanted Forest for donating the patio bench and Tami Proctor for her original art that was auctioned off. We all had a lot of fun all night long. Thanks for the support.

My husband and I attended the convention in Sacramento last June and we had a great time. The events were fun and the meetings and socials were the best. I picked up information about all the new special event book programs available. I bought the Pony Express events book to walk in states along the Poney Exress route. In addition to the states and capitals, there are books for covered bridges, lighthouses, rivers, and many others. All you have to do is participate in an event near the river, lighthouse, or in the state or capital city. When your event book is full, send it in for validation and receive your award.

I congratulate all of you who have completed event and distance milestones this past quarter. And I urge you all to buy the books and work in the AVA program. Walking is one of the best ways to ensure good health and an awareness of our beautiful surroundings. IVV Event/Distance Awards are as follows: Carlene Ashbakeer 10; Donna Varnell 100; Darlene Ponder 250 & 2,500K; Marianne Nelson 375; Marsha Fox 2,000K; Loralee Wright 1,500K; Joyce Payne 2,000K; Mark Brown 4,000K; Myra Tams 4,500K; and Dan Norgail 6,000K;

The Gadabouts have one more scheduled event this year in Huntsville on September 8th. I hope you all will attend. Thanks for all the great memories I share with you at volkssport events. In closing I'd like to quote Soren Kierkegaard thought in the Aug/Sep American Wanderer newspaper: "Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it."

GADABOUT NEWS May 2007

Thanks to everyone who participated at the National MS Society event. We're happy to say we did reach our projected goal and had a good time on a perfect spring day. The Ogden River area is especially beautiful. This is the same course for the Ogden YRE event hosted by the Golden Spike Striders, so remember to return and walk it again for that event stamp.

Congratulations to our those who have reached event/distance milestones: Connie Barrett 175 events; Mark Brown 250 and 4500 Ks; Myra Tams 425; Dennis Barrett 1050. Way to go team!

We have some exciting new events coming up in addition the AVA national convention. On June 2nd those of us who are not going to Crazy Horse will be walking at the historic Fort Buenaventura in Ogden Utah. The Gadabouts have teamed with the Weber Pathways committee to host a fun filled event at this great site. There will not be an admission charge to enter the fort on that day. So please come and discover this grand old site, and the new board walk through the wetlands. There has really been a lot of great work accomplished. I'm sure you will enjoy the day.

Then on 15-16 June we will team with the Roy Relay for Life campaign for an all night celebration/remembrance for our friends and family who have dealt with cancer. This is again a fund raiser to assist in the elimination of cancer! There is a special ceremony on the evening of June 15th, then fun and food through the night. You are urged to gather funds from your family and friends and then help us keep a team member on the track all through the night. Because cancer never sleeps. Those who endure will be treated to breakfast on the morning. The event will take place on the track of Roy High School. IVV credit will be awarded to those who complete the required 5 or 10 K distance. Please join us or send a donation check in care of Gadabouts, 3897 N. 1050 W. Ogden UT 84414. For a tax deduction, make check payable to American Cancer Society.

Two more events are sanctioned in Huntsville on Aug 11 and Sept 8. If you haven't discovered the beautiful Ogden Valley, here is a special invitation to walk with us! In August we will walk up around the monastery, and then in September we will walk through the town of Huntsville, see the famous Shooting Star Saloon, and out to the Pineview Marina. So do keep those dates in mind.

The Footloose club will have a night walk in December around the lights in Salt Lake City. And, remember to get in all the great year round events in the area. You can check them out at www.AVA.org

Thanks for your continued support and participation. It's almost time to look forward to another year. So help us make plans. Tell us where you like to walk.

See you on the trails!

GADABOUT NEWS April 2007

Plans are in progress to participate in the MS Walk in Ogden Utah on April 28th. Volkssporters are encouraged to pre-register with the Gadabout team and collect pledges. Details will be available at our website or you may register by clicking here.

Then on June 2, we will particiate in the Ogden Area National Trails Day event at Ft Buenaventura. This is an amazing area so close to downtown Ogden. We will walk on a newly constructed board walk around the wetlands. Please join us for this exciting event. You will enjoy the area.

We will host a camp at the Roy Relay for Life (cancer fund raiser) on 15-16 June. The event will be held at Roy High School. This is a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight aainst cancer. Teams of people camp out and take turns walking or running around a track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event--because cancer never sleeps. The opening ceremony honors cancer survivors, and pays tribute to those who lost their battle with the dread disease. Then at 10:00 p.m. there is a Luminaria ceremony. This is a very rewarding activity. There are lots of things for sale, and food to eat. There is a place for you on our team.

There is still time to sanction more events in 2007. We have many more new volkssporters who are excited to be involved in our sport. Keep walking and stay fit. See you on the trails!

Gadabout Newsletter - January 2007

Happy New Year Everyone! It's time to think about volkssports once again. This year could be one of our best ever. South Dakota will hold the annual Crazy Horse event on June 2. This is the only opportunity for the public to climb up on the Chief Crazy Horse monument that has been under construction for several years. It is a thrilling event with an annual participation of about 7,000 walkers. This is a great opportunity for a family vacation to the Black Hills area. Mount Rushmore is only a short distance away!

Then in late June the AVA will hold the bi-annual convention with 12 great events in the historic California Gold Rush area, wineries, universities, and the Golden Gate Bridge to name a few. The Salt Lake Footloose Club is planning bus trips to both of these events.

We will participate in American Cancer Society Relay for Life, the time an place will be announced. This is a great opportunity to celebrate with family and friends who have survived in victory or remember those who lost their battle with cancer. The money we raise goes to the American Cancer Society. It's an all night walking event with lots of food and prizes donated my local businesses. Come join the fight against cancer. Register with the Gadabout team, we’ll walk all night and celebrate with good food and entertainment. There will be a cancer survivor ceremony. Every team member gets a T-shirt!

Events are planned for January at the Hof German Sister City Festival. In February at the Farmington Bird Refuge during the Eagle migration period, and events in Tooele and Logan to be announced. We've had requests to do the tri-county event at Monte Cristo, and any other area you can think of. Local communities are expanding trail systems. We want to do our part to assist in this important effort. We need you input and support. If you can just sit at a checkpoint, that would be a big help. If you can volunteer let us know.

Tell your friends about volkssports. Lets all strive for better health by walking somewhere every day and participating at an event every month. There are lots of Year Round and Seasonal events just waiting to be enjoyed! See you on the trails.
