The tyranist's thoughts
I am in the habit of watching the trailer of a movie before I actually watch the movie whenever possible.
Usually, it just makes me wonder why I wanted to see it, but in the case of Cut, I got very
exicted. Trailers aren't everything, but once in a while, a movie lives up to its trailer and is really something
to see. In this case, I think that the movie almost makes it and in the end is pretty good anyway.
There was quite a bit of buzz about this one when it was first made and unfortunately, I didn't get to see it
then. I've heard numerous comparisons to Scream, both
favorable and unfavorable. I come down on the favorable side. It bears some striking resemblance to most
of the post-modern horror films of the last few years, and as far as I'm concerned surpasses the problems that
a lot of them have had.
I didn't know that Molly Ringwald was in this one until I took the case up to the rental counter. They had printed
her name alongside the title on the rental case and that shocked me a little. I'll tell you why. I know a lot of people
see movies specifically for stars they like, and I have certain actors that I will watch in anything as well. But it is
plain wrong to mark the movies that way. Granted not everyone is intelligent enough to remember which movies
their favorite star is in, but I believe that if they don't know it should be a pleasant surprise for them. The counter
argument, which has been made to me in the past, is that some people would never rent movies that way. Well,
tough shit. It's their problem to deal with. In the case of Cut, I was particularly perplexed while watching
the movie and realizing that Molly Ringwald not only wasn't the star, but didn't even do that good of job. I like Molly
Ringwald, but I wouldn't have sought this movie out for her. Instead, it would have been a nice surprise on top of
having rented a movie I was interested in, to find out that she was in it.
Anyway, back to the movie. While Ms. Ringwald really wasn't that good, there were several others who I thought
performed beyond my expectations. Specifically, Jessica Napier was exceptional and I have to mention Sarah
Kants at the same time. The script and plot weren't always the best, but the movie had enough moments to really
shine.
I would highly recommend seeing this movie. It is unusual that a bit of post-modern horror comes along that
stirs my blood, but this one was fun. It is more intelligent than most of its peers and in spite of its obviously lower
budget, manages to look just as slick. Check it out immediately.
