The tyranist's thoughts
I hadn't really heard about this one when Rish brought it over for us to screen. I don't even remember seeing a trailer. It didn't matter. I was hooked about a minute in and enjoyed it all.
A bunch of people happen to be at a bar in the middle of nowhere. They are all more or less minding their own business when a man busts in and tells them that some awful things are headed this way. They don't believe him right away, but it all becomes clear, and the death and mayhem start.
This is that rare mix of horror with just the right splash of comedy to get you to let your guard down at key moments. The writing is witty and makes good use of horror's traditions. The effects are exceptional and mostly practical. The story ends up coming across without much to degrade it.
I'd rank this alongside Slither as one of the best horror films of the year. But that might tell you what kind of mood I've been in during 2006.
The secluded setting and the wonderfully eclectic mix of characters, who for the most part behave exactly like they should, and the true menace of the creatures that we really don't see much of until late in the movie generates an atmosphere that I've seen a lot of people shoot for and miss. This has the urgent, desperate edge without ever completely losing track of reality and remaining unpredictable in just the right spaces.
Highly recommended. It's a fun little horror flick.

Rish Outfield's reviews
A friend of mine back in L.A. vowed to TiVo the "Project Greenlight" this film originated on, but we sort of had a falling out (I really like that term, I think I first heard it on Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indy explains why he's not in contact with Abner Ravenwood anymore), so I not only didn't follow the path to this film getting made, I wasn't even aware of its existence. My loss.
During the film, I mentioned to tyranist that (executive producer) Wes Craven must have been kicking himself that he can't make movies like this anymore. In all honesty, this shouldn't have been as good as it was.
Tyranist didn't mention that it was filled with characters with such nonsensical names as Harley Mama, Beer Guy, Honey Pie, Hot Wheels, and Jason Mewes. It was funny and clever how their names were also their descriptions (ie Heroine and Grandma and Boss Man and Coach and Hot Chick Who Doesn't Take Her Top Off).
This film was fun, surprising, and incredibly violent. Good stuff. It was a lot like Dog Soldiers. And that's high praise. This is one of those movies I wish I had seen on the big screen, with a big, vocal (in a positive way) audience. But I didn’t. I saw it at my place with my best mate tyranist at my side. And that ain’t half bad.
In fact, when it came time to tally up the best movies of 2006, Feast was right up there.
