Rish Outfield's reviews
Richard Blaney (Jon Finch) is a man who stumbles into the path of a serial killer and is pursued by the police, who are sure he is the murderer.
People always talk about Hitchcock as the Master of Suspense, and I generally believe them, but watching Frenzy really reminded me why they call him that. There were some nice moments, on the streets, sneaking around with a body in tow, the shot where the camera slowly backs away from the building in total silence, the scene in the bed of the truck, where I was jumping around in anticipation and dread. I found that to be impressive. Again, he created a bit of sympathy for his villain, like he always seemed to, and I was riveted to the screen all throughout. Plus, there was humor in this film that lightened the dark mood of the story, and the scenes with Inspector Oxford and his wife are the highpoints of the film.
I found it odd that this was such a British film, after years of making American films, but it was still quite good and quite accessible to an American audience. The title didn't really work for me (but hey, half the time when I hear the word 'frenzy' I think of one of the Transformers), and the idea of a necktie killer was interesting. As far as I know, this was the only Hitchcock film with nudity and to garner an R rating. When I hear that this is one of Hitchcock's lesser works, it really goes to show how great the man really was.

The tyranist's thoughts
I am a professed Hitchcock fan and have been taking more opportunities to see his films. When Rish and I were browsing for a pile of movies to entertain ourselves, we happened to wander into the Hitchcock section of the video store. This isn't something we normally do since our needs are generally well satisfied in the horror section. Rish settled almost immediately on Frenzy and we were fated to see it.
That the plot centers around a psychopath almost goes without saying. The twist here is that we are set up knowing who the perptrator is and knowing who is being framed for it. The twists and turns are a bit maddening at times, but in the end I found it satisfying.
This is an unusual British production so late in his career, but I suspect that the movie couldn't have been made the same in the U.S. I enjoyed the very British feel though, and found that it enhanced the movie rather than detracted from it.
