The tyranist's thoughts
Somewhere between the horror genre and the adventure genre, this movie takes a different and relatively early look at zombies. It even sticks sort of near some of the real life mythology around zombies.
An adventure book writer, his agent/publisher, and his agent's wife all fly to a little island known as Voodoo Island so that he can do some research for a new novel. Once there, however, they discover all is not right and are soon fighting for their lives.
The zombies in this one are actually pretty cool considering the time. Nothing like what Romero would manage, but stylistic enough that they are clearly zombies even in black & white.
The story is sort of lame, but it is an adventure story and reminds me of many of the serials I used to watch on Saturday afternoons. The lead girl (played by Heather Hewitt) is attractive and her constant peril pulls the story along nicely. The writer (played by William Joyce) is in the mold of Hemingway and all about getting stuck in when it comes to the adventure. There was one female character that had a voice second only to Fran Drescher in annoyance, but luckily and in spite of her early appearance, she turns out to be a minor character.
I enjoyed this. The production values were decent, the story about what it had to be, and the zombies cool for their time. About my only complaint is that the music was pretty annoying in parts. It's like they were afraid of silence or dialogue carrying a scene.
Check this one out if you get a chance. You might not like it, but then you might.
