Rish Outfield's reviews
This film prompted me to want to add "Hot Villain" to our list. Although tyranist denied my request, this would've gotten two skulls. You know, I used to think this was a stupid movie, but in re-watching it for the site...it's not that bad. When it came out, back in '95, everybody said it was a dirty movie, so I was a little embarrassed to go see it, and that might have contributed to my dislike. I considered the premise very weak back then, but now, it seems pretty good (have I lowered my standards? You be the judge). I remember Michael Madsen's character as being unlikable, and wondering what Ben Kingsley was doing in this thing. And I really freaked when the guy in the hot tub told SIL to get off him . . . freaked, as in shouting, "No way!" Also, I was more than a little creeped-out by Forrest Whitaker's 'feelings' guy. No change there. I remember thinking Natasha Henstridge was about the most beautiful chick I had seen since what's her name back in high school, my mouth dropping open in the half-dozen times she took her clothes off. Well, THAT, at least remains. Yes, the alien SIL, though only slightly more attractive than the Queen in Aliens, can take over my world anytime she wants to. The morphing effects are pretty good, and the gore is impressive. The baby with the tongue didn't suck so much this time around, either. The rest of the movie is a silly, enjoyable sci-fi actioner, that has become a guilty pleasure. Best Scare: Hmm . . . maybe when the girl in the toilet stall gets her spine ripped out.
I'd Recommend It To: Nudity-lovin' computer generated sci-fi-horror junkies.

The tyranist's thoughts
As far as sexy alien movies go, I much prefer Lifeforce, but Species was not as bad as I had been led to believe. It takes itself seriously and makes a good stab at doing the strange alien invasion thing right. I will say that I found it hard to hate the alien. The fact that Natasha Henstridge is so good looking coupled by the sympathy invoked by her genetic need to mate, made hating her very difficult. Still, they had to hunt her down. Michael Madsen does a find job as our co-protagonist (Natasha being the other one). The chase is fun and interesting to watch. I loved Forest Whitaker's character. But I can't name a movie that I hated Forest in. As a rip-off (almost all alien movies made now are) it wasn't too bad. The idea of producing the beast through combining human DNA with alien isn't particularly new, but it was well-handled and Feldman seemed to make the idea his own unlike what he would do later with Virus (but how could I ever hate the mind that brought us The Golden Child. Overall, it is a movie worthy of seeing especially if you are going to do a back to back thing with Species II.
