The tyranist's thoughts
While there are literally thousands of slasher flicks, there aren't a lot of priest fights off evil movies. After
watching The Unholy, I'm convinced that there should have been one less. It isn't outright terrible like a lot
of the slashers are, and in fact, I'd put it in the pretty mediocre range. The problem is that while a mediocre or
even bad slasher can be fun to watch anyway, a mediocre or bad priest fights off evil movie is never fun. They just
take themselves too seriously.
So a priest in New Orleans (where else?) dies mysteriously, but not that mysteriously since we get to see what happened
before the credits are up. The filmmakers than proceeded to try to make a mystery out of who did it giving us little
hints as to who might have done it and even conspiracy tips. Then, at the end, they reveal that it wasn't any of the
things they hinted, but just exactly what they showed us in the first place. This pissed me off even more. If you are
going to try to play it as a mystery, then perhaps you shouldn't show the event up front. Conversely, if you show the
audience what happened, don't try to hint that something else is the truth unless you're going to give us a little
payoff
Needless to say, this left me deeply unfulfilled. The acting wasn't bad and neither was the dialogue (mostly), but
I could really have used a little intelligent story telling. There are far better movies out there so I wouldn't
waste your time with this one.
