The tyranist's thoughts
Maybe import restrictions are loosening, or maybe the advent of digital technology is just making distribution more possible, but it seems to me that there is a lot more foreign horror sitting on the shelves at my neighborhood rental emporium these days. This particular film hails from Australia, but really could have been made anywhere that had access to a large body of water.
So a woman sets out to go round the world on a boat all alone. Most of the way through her trip, she is becalmed and very strange things start to happen. Through a generous number of flashbacks we find out more about her past and what lead her to this place. And we care less and less.
The movie is clean and had a decent budget for what it was trying to do. The setting is naturally creepy which lead to a few shivers on my part. Other than that though, it seems that they really couldn't decide what the film was supposed to be. Is it a horror tale? Is it just a movie about someone trying to come to terms with her past? In the end they obviously couldn't decide because they manage to roll credits without much resolution at all.
This borders on a one-woman show and has more than one long, dry stretch. It just really wasn't my kind of movie, but then I didn't really enjoy Cast Away all that much and there are some obvious similarities between the two necessitated by the setting. That's not to say that if you liked Cast Away, you'll like this one at all. But you might like it more than I did.
