Black Sun Rising

Author: C.S. Friedman

Year: 1991

Abstract:
Man has founded a colony on a distant world. Something horrible was discovered, and 1200 years later, what remains of mankind is still fighting that evil. This planet which they tried to call home was already home to a substance call the fae. The fae reacted to man's imaginings and dreams, converting them into very real monsters that slaughtered them. Damien Vryce, a traveler, a warrior, a priest, must team up with the darkest of all and most dispicable evil, the Hunter. Together, they form a team that will either destroy the evil, or destroy each other.

Spectre's Review
My, my. This was a kick in the pants. A wicked combination of science fiction and fantasy, Black Sun Rising (first book in the Coldfire trilogy) will take you to a world you won't be able to leave. Such horror, such delight, all rolled up into one. It's a moderate sized book (almost 600 pages) and all of it wonderful! The heroes of the book are two very different people. One, Damien, the real hero, is a good man who has sacrificed his soul to defend mankind. The other, the Hunter, is of such despicable evil you want him destroyed, but at the same time, you can't afford to have him destroyed, because then all of humanity will be lost. Friedman makes you WANT to root for the evil. I like that. A warning, though, this book is definitely not for the faint of heart, or the sensitive. This must go into your permanent collection, though.
