Eon

Author: Greg Bear

Year: 1985

Abstract:
An asteroid falls into orbit around Earth. It's only 300 km long, and it came out of nowhere. Earth is on the brink of nuclear war, and NASA, NATA and the UN send explorers to investigate. The Russians, feeling left out, decide they want to send their own group, but not to investigate, to take over. Inside the asteroid, a secret is uncovered that defies all imagination. The remnants of a vast civilization are found, a civilization that spoke English, Russian, and Chinese. The interior of the asteroid is much bigger than the outside, and a corridor, stretching further than sensors can scan, lead to a secret that even the survival of Earth pales in comparison.

Spectre's Review
This one pretty much has it all. The only elements it's lacking are horror and magic. The technology is wonderful. This idea must have come from a dream or something. Anyway, the characters are very well portrayed, and fighting sequences are wonderfully orchestrated. The ending was very interesting as well. This is defeintely one to read. Be careful, the pace is VERY slow at times, but the technology and plot points are critical, so don't skip around. I thought the Russian attack on the Stone was pretty good, and the subsequent conflict in the interior very nicely done. It's funny to see how contemporary military sci-fi has changed since the fall of Russia.
