The Pride of Chanur

Author: C.J. Cherryh

Year: 1982

Abstract:
Pyanfar Chanur, the commander of a Hani cargoship, takes in the Outsider, to the dismay of her crew, and the rest of the sentient species who regularly flock to Meetpoint Station. Tulley had no hair, couldn't speak their language, and was more of a nuicance than a help. It sure made the Kif angry, though, so Pyanfar knew she couldn't give him up. Tulley was a fugitive, and now the entire Hani people were at risk. Unless Pyanfar and the Pride could find out what secrets the Outsider held, there would be war.

Spectre's Review
Although this didn't rate high in the categories, this was an excellent book. Cherryh does a very good job melding the 1st and 3rd person perspectives. Humans are totally unknown in the Compact, and when Tulley gets aboard the Pride, they have a hard time thinking he's even intelligent. The action is pretty quick, and I really like the character development. What's even more interesting is Cherryh's writing matures through the book. You can tell. I highly recommend this one. It provides a unique perspective to the future of human space travel.
