Andrew J. Whitnah Obituary

Resident of Fulton County Since 1836

Andrew J. Whitnah died at his home on South Fourth avenue, just beyond the city limits, Wednesday morning at ten minutes of nine o'clock.

Blood-poisoning was the cause of death. Mr. Whitnah had been unable to leave his room since three weeks ago las Sunday. He had been quite feeble since an attack of paralysis by which he was stricken September 2. He was prostrated only a short time, but did not recover his strength. Up to last fall, he was remarkably hale and vigorous for a man of his years, and had hardly known a day's illness in all his life.

He was born at West Liberty, West Virginia, February 23, 1815. In 1819 his father, William Burns Whitnah, took his family to Livingston county, New York. In 1832 they went from there to Michigan, where they remained four years. April 12, 1836, Andrew J. Whitnah was married to Miss Elizabeth J. Hendershott, of New York. Directly afterward the Whitnah family came to Illinois and settled in Fulton county.

Mr. Whitnah leaves on son and two daughters, of a family of eleven children. The son is J.C. Whitnah, of Clarinda, Iowa. The daughters are Mrs. Harriet N. Taylor, of Canton, and Mrs. Effie Harmison, of Cuba. Hiram A. Whitnah, who died March 8, 1894, was another son. One son, A.J. Whitnah, jr., died about ten years ago. The six other deceased children have been dead many years.

His wife died October 19, 1890.

He leaves twenty-three grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. One brother--Joseph Whitnah, or Norris--also survives him.

Funeral services are held at the residence Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. The Rev. A.R. Mathes officiates.
