The compilation of the index began in 1926, when Andrew Jenson
announced that a list would be prepared including
"the name of every man, woman, or child who crossed any ocean en
route to Utah from 1847 to 1868."
The index was prepared from several sources, including the
Liverpool emigration records (CR 271 25, 1849-1923,
with volumes for 1886-1898 missing), the Scandinavian Mission
emigration records (CR 271 38, 1854-1920, with
volumes for 1886-1900 missing), the Netherlands Mission emigration
records (CR 271 37, 1904-1914), and
the Swedish Mission emigration record (CR 271 39, 1905-1932). The
index cards show that information was also drawn from
typescripts of emigration records that are included in mission
manuscript histories, Jenson's History of the Scandinavian
Mission,
the Journal History, the Deseret News, and other
sources.
Alphabetical index of Church members who emigrated from European
countries to the United States, 1847-1885 and 1899-1925.
Most of those in the index who sailed before 1885 traveled on
ships chartered by the Church's Liverpool office, while those who
came in the twentieth century came singly or in groups and were
probably assisted by the Liverpool office in making their travel
arrangements.
Sometimes called the Crossing the Ocean index.
