Hmmm...
I always thought that this song was about THE "Hall of Mirrors", located in
Versailles. This famous hallway witnessed many historical events, one of
which was the proclamation of the German Empire, as well as the signing of
the Treaty of Versailles. So when Hutter sings about the young man
stepping into the "Hall of Mirrors", perhaps he is partially talking about
the feelings people experience when exploring historical places haunted
with the ghosts and memories of the past (like the feelings I got when I
went to Westminster Abbey and Stonehenge). If this is truly a song about
the "Hall of Mirrors" in Versailles, then I think it fits in well with the
rest of the album, as "Trans Europe Express" is mostly an album about
travelling the European countryside, and the "Hall of Mirrors" happens to
be a famous tourist destination.
Kling Klang!

I love your historical viewpoint. Works better than my
"halls of medicine" concept.. And ending with the very
provocative "tourist destination" really hits hard. That concept is
very abstract and beautiful.. Europe Endless - regarding the nostalgia
and history, Hall of Mirrors - that decadence leads into it's
introspection. Showroom Dummies - the detatchment from the
individuality. In a sense, they really have to go together. TEE just
takes the rest of the album through those same speculations - it passes
too quickly. Just like fame and individuality and nostalgia.

This song is, it's always seemed to me, very clearly about narcissism,
distorted self-perception and other "altered states" resulting from being an
"'artist'". Kraftwerk have always been aware of these issues, which, I would
argue, underlie almost every action they take, from their packaging as a
band (whether as new Europeans, mannekins, robots or whatever) through to
their consistent love-hate relationship with fame.

I only read about THE Hall of Mirrors fairly recently, and of course I did
wonder about the Kraftwerk song. I still think the lyrics are unambiguously
about the self-image of "artists", but the title (in its German version,
'Spiegelsaal') must have an extra resonance for German listeners. The
injured national pride caused by the Treaty of Versailles encouraged the
mindset in which National Socialism and other extremist movements
flourished: once again Kraftwerk can be seen to be alluding to sensitive
issues in modern German history, but only if the listener so decides!
Otherwise, it can all be put down to their awareness of the Zeitgeist.

My guess is that it's in fact version three of the collection containing
trance-remixes by various artists of Kraftwerk songs but I didn't know there was
a vol3. I have vol1 and although I'm not really that much into trance I like it a
lot, very good remixes imho.

In an old interview it was mentioned that Huetter once planned
(or did) a room with mirrors all around. Probably just for fun.
There's also a big "Spiegelsaal" in Ludwig II of Bavaria's
castle at Herrenchiemsee. It was modelled after Versailles.
It would fit in with "parks, hotels and palaces".

Hi
As I get the digest of this discussion group, I don’t know yet if anyone has
posted anything about the Channel 4 Top 100 Number One Singles, as voted for
by the British public and screened on Channel 4 on Saturday night. If this
topic has been covered already, and I expect it has – many apologies!! I
grovel humbly before you.
Well with Imagine by John Lennon at number one, Kraftwerk only made it as
far as a paltry number 89 with The Model (a couple of places below Kylie and
“I Should Be So Lucky” - !!!) . There was, however, an amusing interview
with Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook from New Order who claimed that after
they had released Blue Monday in 1983, Kraftwerk had been in touch to ask
how they got the bass drum sound. “Oh we can send you a sample.” offered New
Order. “No,” came the reply, “we need to know the process.” Marc Almond also
offered his thoughts on The Model, but I can’t remember what he said to be
honest.
Also, I received the Madonna album in my Xmas stocking this year, and after
scratching my head and wondering what the hell you were all on about a while
ago, I can now agree that, yes, I can see what you mean about Music and TEE,
and would like to add that the last single (whatever it’s called) reminds me
of Autechre in some of the sounds used.
Happy New Year

Very impressive, but I have to say the only hall of mirrors I have ever seen
is the one in the Bruce Lee movie "Dragon (something)". If in fact they have
a room like that, I imagine Florian chasing Ralf around with a glove shaped

Mmm, have you never looked at yourself in your bathroom
mirror using a small hand mirror? It's a nice effect.
And it proves glass is actually green! And do experience the
frustration that you don't have a mirror with a hole in the
middle!
But, in all honesty, I think this track was "simply" inspired by
experimenting with sounds. If you know how to use a modular
synthesizer here's roughly(!) how to do the mirror sound:
3 VCO's, sine wave, ca 1kHz, outputs connected to the VCA, no filter.
2 LFO's, sawtooth /|, 1 LFO controlling the FM of one VCO, ca. 0.1 Hz
1 LFO controlling the FM of the other two VCO's,
ca 0.2 Hz, the LFO's out of phase.
1 LFO, triangle, controlling the AM of the VCA, ca 4 Hz
1 VCA
Add a generous amount of tweaking and clever echo, and there's
the mirror sound. The trick is to tune the LFO's so that you get
the specific "rhythm" of the original. I had hoped they would play
this sound live too, in '81, but a very simple sound was used instead,
just a sort of "pinggg!" instead of this great wobbly sound. I do
understand though, it's a difficult sound to reproduce, and there
was not that much time for creating a sound live, certainly not in
the early 80's, where presets were rare, and MIDI non-existant...
This wobbly mirror sound is actually one of my favourite Kraftwerk
sounds, it must have kept them occupied many many hours back then
to do it as good as they did, with the distorted mirror and all.
Also from old interviews: Huetter often referred to synthesizers
as "acoustical mirrors", "reflecting directly how you feel".
(I won't claim to understand THAT, while sober!)

Would you mind helping me to identify which sound in Hall Of Mirrors we are
speaking about?
1. Is it the initial shimmering "round" of sounds, or
2. the percussive sound which comes next, echoing but providing a solitary beat,
or
3. the soft bum -bum tone which provides a bass line of sorts, or
4. the melody sound, a sort of chorus dividing the vocals?

I use Nero Burning rom 5 which automaticly converts the mp3-files when you burn
them on a cd as audio cd. I know there are other programs which can convert from
.mp3 or .wav to .cda files but I don't know their names..

I know WinAmp can convert any format it plays to WAV, but I don't know if
it's available for Mac. Cubic Player can do it as well, but it's only a
DOS program. So can XMMS for Linux/Unix systems.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Ralf was probably the one taking the picture,
since he's not in it.
The so called "golden shower" picture was doing a round way back when
Wolfgang's book was first released in Germany, and it shows Wolfgang and

Erotic, definately. It's about time someone took lead for boy bands to
just start marketing the porn anyhow. If they have to wait until the

old ex-teen idols. How about that little crippled dude from Suede, the

Hi,
About two weeks ago I stumbled across a very weird CD containing
_Latin_(!) covers of Kraftwerk numbers.
The CD is from "Senor Coconut Y Su Conjunto" and is entitled "El Baile
Aleman". The covers and inlay are very weird as well, yet try very much
to mimic a Kraftwerk-esque style of cover (e.g. much like "The Robots"
and "Electric Cafe").
Numbers included on the CD are classics like "Showroom Dummies" (in a
Cha-Cha-Cha version), "Autobahn" (in a Merengue version) and "Tour de
France" (in a very fast Merengue version).
I hadn't seen this CD before, not even on CD fairs... What is the most
striking about the CD is that although all the numbers are in a Latin
version, the performers have tried to stay as close to the originals as
is possible.
This CD is really one which should not be missed!
Greetings,
Bjorn.

KRAFTWERK > EXPO 2000
Astralwerks is extremely proud to announce that we will be releasing a US
only remix edition of the Kraftwerk single "EXPO 2000" on March 6. The track
was originally written for the German EXPO festival as a 30 second jingle
and marked the first new musical output from the band in over 13 years. The
attention that new music from Kraftwerk garnered prompted the band to turn
the jingle into a proper song which was originally released in its
un-remixed form in November 1999. Throughout the year Kraftwerk commissioned
some of the most important and influential remixers and producers to rework
EXPO 2000. In addition to Kraftwerks' own Kling Klang mixes are re-mixes by
Orbital, Francois K, DJ Rolando and Underground Resistance.
Here is the track listing:

Several months ago it was discussed here about the 'Computer World' /
'Computerwelt' album cover image.
Since this album is from 1981 I think the computer can be the 8010 Star
Information System created by Rank Xerox at Xerox PARC. At least it is very
similar.

"Does anyone know who made the covergraphic for TdF?"
The cover design was inspired by a Hungarian postage stamp, printed in dark
brown on an orange background, one of a set of ten commorative stamps
featuring different sports (the other stamps had different colours). The
series was issued in August 1953 and was to celebrate the opening of the
then new Peoples' Stadium in Budapest.
I posted a b&w scan of it at:
http://www.egroups.com/files/kraftwerkfans/Tour+de+France/1313_53.jpg
You'll see that even the background colours of Kraftwerk's TdF cover were
determined by the design of that stamp.
As to who actually modified -- I mean designed -- the actual artwork for
KW's cover, who knows?

The last thing that I would want to do is spread crazy rumours. Rather than
criticize me why not look at Amazon.com and look at the Kraftwerk
discography and then tell me I am lying. I merely point out something and I
receive abuse.
Amazon are inviting you to spend $35 or so on this "invisible"
album/single/EP whatever it is, so they are the ones playing the joke and
not me.

I own this stamp and its very nice to see the small changes they have done.
For instance they have updated the bikes with more modern gears...
But the question remains... who made these changes?

bearable, although I almost put the book aside when I read about his fears
of flying and the tennis player's good fortune of missing that one flight

Wolfgang (if you're reading this) I loved the way you take the reader to the
behind scenes, the anecdotes, the good the bad and the ugly of touring, and
what being a Kraftwerk member (ex-member) meant to you all of these years. I
congratulate you on such a good job. You seem to be a wonderful human being

We all realize that. We're not attacking you.
Myself, I'm sick of rumors of new albums. I bet this one is just another
false alarm like that "Brief Introduction to Kraftwerk" bootleg that was
passed off as official last year.
I wish Ralf & Florian would make a concrete statement about their future
plans so we don't have to get stressed about things like this.

Yeah, it's the same old piffle: IIRC, a holiday photo of two Kraftwerkers
making do with the same shower while out in the country somewhere - wasn't
it? (I must admit I did NOT keep a copy to refer to! :-) ). How interesting
such a picture is is in the eye of the beholder, but it just looked like an

PS I just chanced across this at the official Tangerine Dream FAQ

"58. Are Tangerine Dream members fans of the German band =BBKraftwerk=AB?

electronic instruments. We've never heard a TD member whistling a Kraftwerk
tune!"
Fair enough! (No boring TD v. Kraftwerk flames please!).

I remember a conversation on a similar note.. Anyhow, in my
opinion Kraftwerk probably already have multiple albums worth of music
completed. Maybe not final masters, technology improves that process
year by year, but enough to continue a career without any effort. Isn't
that their end goal, robots playing while they persue other endevours?
Prince has a similar archive of secret music, and it struck me as odd..
but when he needs cash or acclaim he releases something from the vault.
K have been engaged in studiokraft for years now.. so, as far as waiting
for releases, that's the game. Possibly, they only permitted 'expo2000'
to be mixed around like a Rick Ruban experiment - to see what popular
results could be. Hutter has no patience for record companies and is
shrewd about presenting anything.. being burnt by EMI probably made him
warey. And those "mixes" are all shit. Every one. If a real
man/machine with sense, like Cylob were to get involved, I doubt very
much we would be waiting still. How disappointing to release just the
commissioned work, not even your intended albums material, and have that
blanched and homogenized into "club" mixes.

I have to disagree with you, most of the new mixes I think are pretty good.
Especially the François K and Orbital mixes. I don't really understand this
purist view a lot of people have when it comes to remixing, after all,
remixing other peoples work has been going on for hundreds of years.
Classical composers were always pinching other composers choons and doing
'variations on a theme'. I think it's great to hear other peoples
interpretations. The remixed versions sounding better than the original in a
lot of cases.

The graphic style of the cyclists is similar to the inner sleeve of the
Trans Europa Express album, so possibly it is Emil Schult. If you look
closely at the 1983/84 sleeve you will see the quality of the drawing of the
faces is a bit different to the rest of the cyclists' bodies, suggesting the
basic four-figure arrangement on the artwork was put together first and then
drawings of the faces added (and replaced for the 1999 reissue!).
Of course, technical skill is one aspect, but I expect Ralf & Florian were
playing the role of Art Directors whoever did the actual physical work.
Any chance of making a colour jpeg scan of the stamp and putting it up
somewhere on the internet?
Richard :-)

was by Bernd & Hilla Becher, two conceptual artist/photographers from
Germany: "The Bechers have been documenting the aging world of the
industrial age for decades. Their beautiful, unadorned and repetitious
images are a mirror held up to the paradoxical existence of mankind's
seemingly endless capacity for building, improving, compositing, developing,
using, wasting and ultimately discarding the planet we live on." Perhaps
their visuals had been some influence for the first and second Kraftwerk
albums?
There's some info about them here: http://laudanum.net/nrrtv/bchr/
And they have several books at amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author=Becher%2C%20Hilla/107-1791531-8292523
Hmmm, interesting titles: 'Mineheads', 'Industrial Facades', 'Basic Forms',
'Gas Tanks', 'Water Towers'... :-)

Hey all,
At long last I now have a cd-rw drive in my pc at home. So now I'm
itching to start trading. It doesn't have to be Kraftwerk, by
the way. If you're on this list and think what you have is good,
I probably will, too. But I'd like to trade regular cd audio
format discs not mp3.
Here's my current list of KW ready for trading:
Kraftwerk, Warfield '98 (2 cd's)
Yup, that's it. Just one item (and some Beatles boots). No need
to mention I'm new at this, I guess! So if you'd like to trade,
please drop me a line.
Thanks,
Mike

Both are really expensive, but "Wassertuerme" (Water Towers) and "Hochoefen"
(Blast Furnaces) are the two Becher photo volumes you can buy without
hesitation - IMHO. All others you better have a look at before buying.

My complaint about Mr. Bruce W. Lloyd
I would like to clarify some comments I made recently regarding Mr. Bruce W.
Lloyd. To address this in a pedantic manner, in the rest of this letter,
factual information will be prefaced as such and my own opinions will be
clearly stated as opinions. For instance, it is a fact that Mr. Lloyd's
diatribes are based on a technique I'm sure you've heard of. It's called
"lying". We have to start talking with one another honestly, in honest
language. To be more pedantic about it, if I seem a bit nasty, it's only
because I'm trying to communicate with him on his own level.
As I gaze into my crystal ball, I see that Mr. Lloyd's shock troops will win
support by encapsulating frustrations and directing them toward unpopular
scapegoats one of these days. I'll give you an example of this, based on my
own experience. As you know, I'm sticking out my neck a bit in talking about
Mr. Lloyd's zingers. It's quite likely he will try to retaliate against me
for my telling you that there is a format he should follow for his next
literary endeavor. It involves a topic sentence and supporting facts. If Mr.
Lloyd had even a shred of intellectual integrity, he'd admit that he
frequently avers his support of democracy and his love of freedom. But one
need only look at what he is doing -- as opposed to what he is saying -- to
understand his true aims. Perhaps it sounds like stating the obvious to say
that he has nothing but contempt for you, and you don't even know it. That's
why I feel obligated to inform you that when he says that he is a bearer and
agent of the Creator's purpose, in his mind, that's supposed to end the
argument. It's like he believes he has said something very profound.
The gloss that Mr. Lloyd's trucklers put on Mr. Lloyd's conclusions
unfortunately does little to get the facts out in the hope that somebody
else will do something to solve the problem. If history follows its course,
it should be evident that Mr. Lloyd insists that people don't mind having
their communities turned into war zones. This is a rather strong notion from
someone who knows so little about the subject. Honor means nothing to him.
Principles mean nothing to him. All he cares about is how best to prey on
people's fear of political and economic instability.
Let's just ignore Mr. Lloyd and see what he does. Will politically incorrect
ex-cons ever push the envelope on our knowledge of the world around us?
Don't bet on it. In general, he is not only immoral, but amoral.
I unquestionably feel that we should establish clear, justifiable
definitions of absolutism and larrikinism, so that you can defend a decision
to take action when Mr. Lloyd's secret police damn this nation and this
world to Hell, and I have formalized my commitment to this high ideal by
ensuring that I always cast a gimlet eye on Mr. Lloyd's perversions. Perhaps
I'm reading too much into Mr. Lloyd's notions, but they don't seem to serve
any purpose other than to adopt approaches that have not been tested to try
to solve problems that have not been well-defined. From a public-policy
perspective, Mr. Lloyd's convictions smack of faddism. That's the sort of
statement that some people maintain is bookish, but which I believe is
merely a statement of fact. And it's a statement that needs to be made,
because Mr. Lloyd says he's going to increase society's cycle of hostility
and violence before long. Good old Mr. Lloyd. He just loves to open his
mouth and let all kinds of things come out without listening to how
incompetent they sound. I am on an important mission to counteract the
subtle, but pervasive, social message that says that he has a "special"
perspective on sesquipedalianism which carries with it a "special" right to
lay the foundation for some serious mischief. If I don't accomplish that
mission, his plans to biologically or psychologically engineer the worst
sorts of ruthless bohemians I've ever seen to make them even more confused
than they already are could well succeed.
An armed revolt against Mr. Lloyd is morally justified. However, I insist
that it is not yet strategically justified. Despite his evident lack of
grounding in what he's talking about, he recently stated that it is
fatuitous to question his stratagems. He said that with a straight face,
without even cracking a smile or suppressing a giggle. He said it as if he
meant it. That's scary, because if he makes fun of me or insults me, I hear
it, and it hurts. But I take solace in the fact that I am still able to
reveal the constant tension between centripetal and centrifugal forces of
dialogized heteroglossia resulting from his pranks. To put it another way,
the unalterable law of biology has a corollary that is generally overlooked.
Specifically, this is not wild speculation. This is not a conspiracy theory.
This is documented fact.
Before I continue, let me state that I correctly predicted that Mr. Lloyd
would regulate insurrectionism. Alas, I didn't think he'd do that so
effectively -- or so soon. I can't let him depressurize the frail vessel of
human hopes, and besides, I want my life to count. I want to be part of
something significant and lasting. I want to contribute to the intellectual
and spiritual health of the body politic.
Wild deviants are sharply focused on an immediate goal: to reduce human
beings and many other living organisms to engineered products and mere cogs
in the social machine. Given what I know about out-of-touch mumpish-types, I
can say with confidence that Mr. Lloyd maliciously defames and damagingly
misrepresents everyone and everything around him. There's a word for that:
libel. He places his indelible imprimatur upon a form of extremism that is
fundamentally, pervasively, and inescapably iconoclastic, and that's one
reason why I'm writing this letter. And if you think that the laws of nature
don't apply to him, then you aren't thinking very clearly. If Mr. Lloyd can
one day sell otherwise perfectly reasonable people the idee fixe that
censorship could benefit us, then the long descent into night is sure to
follow.
He consistently falls short of telling the whole story or of making a solid
point. Of course, it's not quite that simple. While it is not my purpose to
incriminate or exculpate or vindicate or castigate, I would never take a job
working for him. Given his directionless silly mottos, who would want to?
My current plan is to turn Mr. Lloyd's blathering sentiments to our
advantage. Yes, he will draw upon the most powerful fires of Hell to tear
that plan asunder, but the main dissensus between me and Mr. Lloyd is that I
claim that Mr. Lloyd's viewpoints are a mockery of all that is fair and
equitable. He, on the other hand, contends that cultural tradition has never
contributed a single thing to the advancement of knowledge or understanding.
If the past is any indication of the future, he will once again attempt to
pose a threat to the survival of democracy. Though I don't doubt the depth
of Mr. Lloyd's sentiments, it's rather the form of his expressions that I
find both fastidious and egocentric. I should add parenthetically that Mr.
Lloyd thinks it would be a great idea to deface property with racially and
sexually derogatory epithets and offensive symbols. Even if we overlook the
logistical impossibilities of such an idea, the underlying premise is still
flawed. Now that I've been exposed to his scribblings, I must admit that I
don't completely understand them. Perhaps I need to get out more. Or perhaps
the poisonous wine of neopaganism had been distilled long before he entered
the scene. Mr. Lloyd is merely the agent decanting the poisonous fluid from
its bottle into the jug that is world humanity. To sum it all up, Mr. Bruce
W. Lloyd's machinations are certainly uncalled for.
Yours sincerely,
Oh Jay - "The Fool" ;-)
I'm out! PEACE!!!

Subject: (kw) Important, please read (RFC 1855: Netiquette)
Date: 22 Jan 2001 11:00:04 -0200
Once there was a time when almost everyone in the internet was a=20
technical person or scientist sharing and developing knowledge. Then
private networks become connected and a whole new audience was formed.
This huge mass of people was interested on making business, meeting
people , talking and gaming over the internet (oh, yes, there is also warez
and mp3z, nude babes and such :) ) and has not had the chance to be=20
introduced to the technical writings that documented the internet. Those
are called RFCs, one of those RFCs the RFC numbered 1855 documents what
they called "netiquette" and is fairly complete, everyone should have the
right to read it, see how wonderful it is to play nice with each other
by following those recomendations, but most people are denied this right.
Indeed, many people intuitively follow these rules , but many do not. And
that is not their fault. I therefore grant this right to all you list
members who did not have the chance to read it before. Go and read it:
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1855.html
I am sure it will be useful to everyone, even those people who
already follow this document, without ever knowing of its existence.=20
For those who do not follow it, please read the part about "one to many"
communication.
From this document, I'd like to point out:
----begin excerpt---
- Remember that the recipient is a human being whose culture,
language, and humor have different points of reference from your
own. Remember that date formats, measurements, and idioms may
not travel well. Be especially careful with sarcasm.
- Wait overnight to send emotional responses to messages. If you
have really strong feelings about a subject, indicate it via
FLAME ON/OFF enclosures. For example:
FLAME ON: This type of argument is not worth the bandwidth
it takes to send it. It's illogical and poorly
reasoned. The rest of the world agrees with me.
FLAME OFF
- If you include a signature keep it short. Rule of thumb
is no longer than 4 lines. Remember that many people pay for
connectivity by the minute, and the longer your message is,
the more they pay.
----end excerpt---
These three rules are mandatory. I read part of the document to
cut/paste these rules from it and in the meantime I've found many other
useful tips I had forgotten. It is a wonderful reading to everyone.
Regards and sorry for the long message
Eduardo.

Ooh... this one begs commentary... >|-(
Do any of you people actually know what a "golden shower" is?! Literally,
it is the erotic act of urinating on your partner for pleasure. I am in
agreement that this is most certainly NOT a "golden shower" pic, as neither
of the Kraftwerk boys are attempting to piddle on each other. Still, there
is something homoerotic about this picture - the way Florian's hand is
lovingly caressing Wolfgang's waist. It is also a well-known fact that
many gay men find shower scenes and wet bodies a turnon - I know a lot of
my homosexual friends do. It's not to say that Kraftwerk are in fact gay
(aside from the fact that I believe that everyone is potentially bisexual -
they just don't know it yet), but you can't deny that there is definitely
sexual undertones to this picture.
So call me a pervert - well, I AM a pervert, and I'm damn well proud of it.
Fetishism and BDSM is fun, exhilerating, and it's perfectly healthy.
There's nothing wrong with a little kinkiness as long as it's between two
consenting adults. And leave homosexuals alone - I am not homosexual (at
least I haven't had a homosexual experience yet), but gays and lesbians,
for the most part, are decent people who just want to live their lives just
like everybody else.
May the rainbow flag wave forever!
Kling Klang!

(Shocked and dismayed that so many fans of one of the most intelligent
electronic groups could be so full of resentment towards a lifestyle as
innocent as homosexuality... tsk tsk tsk...)

1. First of all, guys, I would like to say I really hate this kind of flame
battles... this is really borring... blah, blah, blah and a lot of non
sense. Of course life is a circle, and sometimes we have this on this list,
because IMHO Kraftwerk really don't give us any material to talk about.
2. I always think that kind of discussion should remain on private mails,
not for the list. Here in Brasil we have a phrase for this: roupa suja se
lava em casa (more or less this: dirty clothes shall be cleaned at home).
Come on guys...
3. Final comments are never final...
4. I really can not read Mr. Oh Jay (Simpson?) mails, because his writing is
not english for me. You never thought there's a lot of non english guys here
that are no so good in english (like me) and your writing is much more
difficult to read than a normal english mail? It's not a question of write
like you want but, IMHO, this list is for know interesting people. Of course
I could write in portuguese, but how many people would understand me? I
really don't know if what you say is interesting or not, if you write
interesting mails or not, because I never could read one of them! I just
ignore them, because I can not understand "your" english. It would be simple
just ignore your messages or send them automatically to trash can, but I
only receive the Digest version, so I always get your "looking-like greek
signs"... Here in Brasil we have a lot of indians that didn't talk
portuguese before the portuguese come here (for those who just don't know,
Brasil was "discovered" by Portugal), and just today, when they talk in
portuguese, it's difficult to undertand them, because their portuguese is
funny, with no verbes, articles and son on... like a chikd that is starting
to talk... So think about it, Mr. Oh Jay, before tell "ABSOLUTELY_NOBODY has
to tell me how to write"
5. It's just my opinion.. let's talk about Kraftwerk!!
peace
Nicolau

excuse me , lars , but i write like i _WANT_ to write & ABSOLUTELY_NOBODY

GET_THIS ... please !!! ;-)
~ Many of list members are fed up with your childish mails!
okay ... for those of u , who don't or won't read my mails anymore , i have
a very simply suggestion :
ignore or delete them !!! ;-)
use your "kill files" & / or block my addy !!! ;-)
if u are "unable" to do that , then u simply have to "cope" with me & my
style of writin' !!! PERIOD_!!!

In light of the recent friction between Oh Jay, and everyone else, may I

I'm cc'ing this to Lazlo (list owner) - IMHO he needs to step in and do some
active moderating of the list for a while. It's always depressing to see a
list dragged down by aggressive, infantile flaming, particularly for those
of us who feel a certain vested interest in its well-being.
Kevin
PS Louis, please don't try to incite another flame war, especially so soon
after the last one, unless you really do want to kill off the list. The
subject of homosexuality is obviously an emotive one for you, but let's keep
such discussions relevant and non-inflammatory, OK?

Hello again
Actually I am only 21. I am a representative of younger Kraftwerk fans, and
the fact that I am interested at all in albums made BEFORE I WAS EVEN BORN
is testimony to Kraftwerk's enduring appeal. My interest in Kraftwerk was
rekindled by Expo 2000 and like everyone else I have reasonable hopes that
they will release something sooner or later.
Favourite all time track "Numbers"
John...I have visited your website and agree about your "best of"
collection, but why not go mad and break the rules and include Tour De
France (brilliant on kraftwerk.com by the way).
Rob.

thanx a lot , "el conquistadore" !!! *G+* ;-)
so what do y' all think about this ( if u actually read that far by now !!!
*LOL* ;-))) :
some people "out there" once said that kw were "foolish" , because they
"adopt" to machines & not to "real" instruments like guitars for instance
!!! *sly_grin* ;-)
are they really "foolish" , because they've done things that no-one has done
before ??? ;-)
are they really "foolish" , because they've showed people that there are
indeed "new sights & new sounds" , which they haven't "experienced" so far
??? ;-)
... & finally : is it really sooo "foolish" ( of kw & also of me !!! ;-)
TO_BE_"DIFF'RENT"_&_INDIVIDUAL & have ( achieved ) "somethin'" that others
might not understand completely by now ??? ;-)
well ... jus' think about that y' all !!! *slyest_grin_u_can_imagine* ;-)))
no matter how ridiculous & self-righteous this may "sound" now , but who of
u will remember nicolau centola or bruce lloyd in a few years , eh ??? ;-)
not many , i supppose !!! ;-)
but most of the people here will certainly remember me !!! *hehehe* ;-)))
that's _WHY_ i like TO_BE_DIFF'RENT_&_INDIVIDUAL ... no matter what others
may think about it !!! ;-)
thanx for your attention & goodbye y' all !!!

News from NME: (warning ! they have a large archive of news that didn't)
Kraftwerk - ATP isn't fancy dress, you know
TOMORROW'S ER, ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES
NEIL YOUNG, KRAFTWERK and AUTECHRE are being invited to play the next ALL
TOMORROW'S PARTIES festival in April 2001, nme.com can reveal.
Chicago's Tortoise will work hand-in-hand with promoters Foundation in
picking the bill, following the success of Mogwai's event, held at Camber
Sands Holiday Centre on April 7-9.
Foundation's Barry Hogan told nme.com: "Tortoise have already given me
their wish list and there are some juicy names on it. The ethos of ATP is
to promote bands whose influence extends beyond the mainstream. We want the
interesting rather than the mundane."
It's now strongly rumoured that Shellac will curate the festival in 2002.
Hogan continued: "Shellac loved this year's festival. They made an approach
immediately after their set and gave me their ideal bill the next morning.
It too is very interesting and not what you would expect."
For regular updates see ATP's website www.alltomorrowsparties.co.uk. You
can also see interviews with Steve Albini, Arab Strap, The Delgados and
Gorkys Zygotic Mynci on the nme.com Special Features page from this month's
All Tomorrow's Parties.

They can invite the Pope to be guest DJ, but it doesn't mean he will, of
course. :-) Still, we can hope.

There's 8 tracks from a Karl Bartos concert in K=F6nl in 2000 available h=

In my opinion, the instrumentation is awesum (almost beter than KW for "T=

Somehow the idea of the pope DJing doesn't seem so far-fetched. ;-) Maybe
JMJ made an approach, but it was probably more a case of "We're busy!" than

Ok: everyone has had his say now. Let's not provoke an international
incident, ok?
I don't see why the Brasilians and the Germans can't be friends (except maybe
on the soccer pitch.)
Can we please just talk about Kraftwerk and golden showers now, please?
*LOL*

First of all, before my comments for your "sweet" mail, Mr. Oh Jay:
Sorry for all of this list. I would not talk about this topic anymore, but
considering Mr. Oh Jay answer to my private mail and to the list about his
"off topics", I had to reply it. I promisse to not send anymore mails about
this, considering I'm strongly intend to get out of this list after 6 years,
because it became so boring and non Kraftwerk...
Mr. Oh Jay, I know you are not interested on it, but...
I don't know what kind of world history you learned in Germany, but here in
Brazil we don't speak spanish, but portuguese. So, the aka "el
conquistadore" is not correct for me. I will help you teaching one word in
portuguese: "o conquistador".
Otherwise this "title" is not applicable for me, because my family came from
Italy in the beggining of 20th century, and not from Portugal, so we didn't
have anything to do with the relations between portuguese and native tribes
in Brasil.
Now about your mail:
>2.) concernin' this "o. j. simpson" kind of "joke" , i can only say
>*HAR!HAR!HAR!* :-o
>what a lamer !!! *grumpf* :-/ this "stuff" is sooo old & borin' that it's
>totally rotten by now & _NOBODY_ ( except maybe u , nicolau !? ;-) can
laugh
>about it !!! *pffft* :-o
Well, this is not my joke, but yours... a guy who has the nick Oh Jay is
asking for people call him O J Simpson, don't you think?
>fact is : english isn't my mother tongue too , nicolau !!! ;-)
>i'm from germany & therefor german is my native language !!! ;-)
>i'm sorry if u find my mails more difficult to read than "normal" english
>mails , but i think that i've expressed this here various times before ,
>that my writin' style is simply a part of my _INDIVIDUALITY_ & my
"presence"
>in the "webwideworld" as oh jay !!! ;-) that's _WHY_ i like to write as i
>want to write , mate !!! ;-)
I will not talk about your "way of writing"... it's part of your
personality... but I have to say it's impossible to understand your messages
and I'm sure a lot of other people thinks the same... you have in germany
the Hoch Deutsche, for formal communication... if english is the "official"
internet language, I think all of us have to express ourselves in a way
everyone could understand, even if you are a germany, a portuguese, a
chinese or a native brazilian...
>on the other hand i have a very simple & very basic question to all of u :
>_WHY_ don't u ask me IN_PRIVATE about my "style" of writin' & what it
>actually means ??? *very_curious_indeed* ;-)
I never asked you in private about your way of writing because your mails
never interested me... but, when your mails became almost the totality of
the KW digest, I had to comment about your "personal way of writing"... I
promisse I will never comment about this topic again, because I believe you
become strongly altered when someone criticise your writing...
>BOGUS_!!! >:-O u _CAN_ read them _ALL_ , but u _DON'T_ want to spend "your

>u simply _WON'T_ understand them , because u are to stubborn , mate , ... &
>THAT'S_WHAT_REALLY_ANNOYS_ME_PERSONALLY_!!! *grim* :-/
Sorry if I made you annoyed, it was not my intent... but I really don't have
time or age to spend my time trying to translate your messages into english
and then into portuguese... sorry, it's my opinion... you have your and I
respect it, so respect mine, please.
>hmmm ... "somehow" u understand "my" english very well , otherwise u
>wouldn't have posted this "complaint" about "my style of writin'" , nicolau
>!!! *slyest_grin* ;-)))
>*hehehe* ;-))) u've been "unmasked" , jus' like mr. bruce lloyd !!! *LOL*
>;-)))
Sorry, I have no words to comment about this... this period is so surreal!!
>well ... my suggestion in this case would be : take THE_GREAT_CHALLENGE ...
>& resubscribe to the list in the "normal" modus & get to read all mails
>"individually" !!! *BIG_hint* ;-)))
Another surreal sentence... you will "never change" your way of living, but
I have to... funny.
>oh dear , nicolau !!! :-/ this is A_REALLY_DEROGATORY_"COMMENT" about all
>those native brazilians , don't u know that !? *grim* :-/
>u are jus' "el conquistadore" & therefor it's the same with the americans &
I will not commet this either, because you of course don't know nothing
about our native people... this was not a derogatory comment... indian
culture here is very respected, for me too... the comment was just in the
way of talking... I know some centuries ago, the portuguese and the indians
had some problems, but you can not even compare what happened here with, for
exemple, waht happened in USA. There the indians were just killed and today
you probably don't have many tribes there. In other way, here we have a lot
of tribes... of course smaller than in the XVI century, but at Amazonia, our
biggest rain forrest, we find today tribes that never saw a white man...
Many other countries killed or finished with other people just because they
were different, for example, the spanish in Latin America... but you cannot
criticise the whole country for long past acts, ok?
>if u really think that u are indeed such a "_SOPHISTICATED_" guy , than u
>simply wouldn't say such a bad thing about the NATIVE_BRAZILIANS , nicolau
>!!! *sighs_deeply_in_disgust* :-o
I never told I'm a sophisticated guy... otherwise, my grand father, when
came from Treviso, Italy to Brazil in the beginning of 20th century, was a
shoemaker... not a sophisticated background, but he gave us education! And
I'm proud I speak and write a good portuguese.
>fact is : the NATIVE_PEOPLE of EV'RY_COUNTRY_IN_THE_WHOLE_WIDE_WORLD have a
>longer "tradition" in speakin' their own tongue - that the "conquistadors"
>don't might understand - than those bloody "invaders" itself !!!
well, this is the point I'm sure you didn't understood a single word from my
previous mail... When I told the indians have a childlike speaking I would
like to say when they speak in portuguese, not their native languages... of
course it was a mistake in 16th century when the portuguese came, to force
the indians to speak portuguese, but now we have here, for example, a
dictionary from tupi guarani (an indian language) to portuguese... I never
heared about a similar in any other country...
I really disagree with you when you say that the natives in the whole world
have a longer tradition in speaking their own tongue... IMHO it's so
specific to any kind of generalization, but it's just my opinion.
>i may be "stupid" in some cases & / or "foolish" in some others , but i'm
>really "experienced" when it comes down to self-righteous & narrow-minded
>people like u , nicolau , to know that "they" will NEVER_EVER change me or
>my "style" IN_NO_WAY_AT_ALL_!!! *pretty_convinced_smile* :-)))
This is the most important difference between us, my dear... I'm always
changing, when I identify some interesting point of view, even if it's not
correct for me... otehrwise, you don't know nothing about me to tell I'm a
self-righteous or narrow-minded... be gentle, man, and world will be gentle
with you.
>no matter how ridiculous & self-righteous this may "sound" now , but who of
>u will remember nicolau centola or bruce lloyd in a few years , eh ??? ;-)
>not many , i supppose !!! ;-)
>but most of the people here will certainly remember me !!! *hehehe* ;-)))
>that's _WHY_ i like TO_BE_DIFF'RENT_&_INDIVIDUAL ... no matter what others
>may think about it !!! ;-)
That is not a think that concern to us, but just to time... time will tell
the true... I tell you again: you don't know nothing about me to tell
anything about my future... and remember: be different and individual not
means you are in a good way... we have a lot of examples in your country and
in mine of people who were different and individual and went for the wrong
way...
finally, don't waste your time to answer me... your address went to my
ignore list and I'm getting out of KW list, until things become much more in
good vibes!
peace to all and thanks for the KW list to tolerate another off topic
message
Nicolau

Yup; apparently the guy who made the files was a bit careless during the
process...
I managed to edit all Windows sounds, skips and pops out of the files; the
result is pretty good. I'll put it online one of these days.

hi kwf's !
"o conquistador" ( *VBG* ;-))) Nicolau Centola once again shared his
"PRIVATE_COMMENTS" ( *BWG* ;-))) about me with all of u ... & so do i , for
one more time :
~ First of all, before my comments for your "sweet" mail, Mr. Oh Jay:
first of all , before _I_ comment your postin' to the list any further , i
like to ask u ONE_VERY_SIMPLE_QUESTION_:
WHY_THE_HECK do u have to share "your opinion" about me ONCE_AGAIN with all
the list members , mate ??? *utmost_curious_indeed* ;-)
i really don't understand your indeed very "selfish behavior" anymore ,
nicolau !!! *sigh* :-/
_WHY_ don't u send me your comments IN_PRIVATE , mate ??? *jus'_curious* ;-)
well ... i think that i maybe know the answer to it already : u only like to
"generate" another "silly thread" which causes "flames" & even more
"controversial disKussions" !!! *grim* >:-|||
but i can tell u this , "o conquistador" nicolau ,
I_WON'T_"PARTICIPATE"_ANY_LONGER_ON_THESE_"SILLY_NONSENSE"_!!! :-/
therefore my sincere advise to all other RESONABLE_"INDIVIDUALS" on this
list is : IGNORE_SUCH_"SELFISH"_PEOPLE like nicolau centolau !!! they
haven't got _ANYTHIN'_ "usefull" to say anymore , so they only try to drag
others into their "flame-baiting" & cause confusion & mess with such
"threats" like "i'll leave this list immediately if this ( insert my
nickname or the name of another "certain individual" here !!! ;-) guys won't
stop their private flame wars !!!" !!! D'OH_!!! :-O
okay now , then
PLEASE_LEAVE_THIS_LIST_ASAP_&_STOP_"FUZZIN'"_&_COMPLAININ'_ANY_LONGER_IN_PUB
LIC , "o conquistador" nicolau !!! fyi : i surely _WON'T_ miss u a single
second & i'll be much happier WITHOUT_U "botherin'" me & others here for
much longer !!! PERIOD_!!!
~ Sorry for all of this list. I would not talk about this topic anymore,
... but u still do it !!! *sigh* :-/
~ but considering Mr. Oh Jay answer to my private mail
WHAT_"PRIVATE_MAIL" are u "fuzzin'" about here , mate ???
*indeed_very_curious*
i haven't received ANY_"PRIVATE_MAIL" from u & _ALL_ your "PRIVATE_MAILS"
were send to this list by YOURSELF_!!! GEE_!!! >:-O
maybe u really don't know , how to send people a "PRIVATE_MAIL" to somebody
, nicolau ??? *sly_grin* ;-)
~ and to the list about his "off topics", I had to reply it.
yep , that's okay with me ... but once again : WHY_NOT_"IN_PRIVATE"_???
*utmost_curious_by_now*

okay , dude !!! ;-) at least I'LL_TAKE_YOUR_WORD_FOR_GRANTED_!!!

well ... WHERE_ARE_YOUR_"KONSTRUKTIVE_KONTRIBUTIONS" by now , mate ???
*jus'_curious* ;-)
fyi : i haven't seen _ANY_ of them here lately !!! *sigh* :-/
~ Mr. Oh Jay, I know you are not interested on it, but...
~ I don't know what kind of world history you learned in Germany,
*hehehe* ;-))) fyi : i've learned at least "somethin'" about south american
history from some friends of mine from chile , argentina , brasil ,
venezuela & peru , dear nicolau !!! *G+* ;-)
~ but here in Brazil we don't speak spanish, but portuguese.
oh , what a "BIG_SURPRISE"_!!! *ROTFLMAO* ;-)))
~ So, the aka "el conquistadore" is not correct for me.
guess what , nicolau ??? i've known this already before u try to "teach" me
one of your "lessons" once again !!! *LOL* ;-)))
oh my , your "selfish" reactions are really sooo
PREDICTABLE_'N'_TOTALLY_OBVIOUS_!!! *XLG* ;-)))
~ I will help you teaching one word in portuguese: "o conquistador".
anyway ... thanx a lot for "teachin'" me "a lesson" once again , "o
conquistador" nicolau !!! *LOLITA* ;-)))
~ Well, this is not my joke, but yours...
hmmm ... what are u talkin' about here , mate ??? *jus'_curious_again* ;-)
~ a guy who has the nick Oh Jay is asking for people
~ call him O J Simpson, don't you think?
*Can'tStopRollin'OnTheFloorLaughin'OutLoudForSomeTimeInTremendousAmusement*
;-)))
well ... let me tell u jus' one thing : "O" & "J" are the _INITIALS_ of my

nicolau !!! *sigh* :-/
~ to tell anything about my future... and remember:
~ be different and individual not means you are in a good way...
fact is : i've never told anybody or even try to convince anybody to believe
that i'm a "decent" 'n' "humble" guy , mate !!! *jus'_another_sly_grin* ;-)
I_AM_WHAT_I_AM_!!! ;-)
some people may like or even "love" me & my "attitude" ... while others may
not like me or even "hate" me & my "attitude" !!! *smartest_grin* ;-)))
there's simply no "I'M_NOT_SURE_IF_I_LIKE_HIM_OR_NOT_!!!" way for the people
who are "confronted" with "my humble existence" , dear nicolau !!!
*also_pretty_convinced_smile* :-)))
that's what makes me maybe not "a good guy" ... but at least
A_TRULY_HONEST_MAN_!!!
~ we have a lot of examples in your country
~ and in mine of people who were different and individual
~ and went for the wrong way...
yep , that much is for sure !!! *sigh* :-/
but _ALL_ of those people weren't really "honest" persons !!! they _ALL_

*very_deep_sigh* :-o
fyi : I_TELL_U_WHAT_I_HONESTLY_THINK_ABOUT_PEOPLE_LIKE_U_!!!
so u may call me "an annoyin' individual" & "a very undiplomatic person" or
whatever else u want to , but

Hello Rob
I've ranted about this before and I apologise if I'm boring anyone. I've
only seen them perform once B4 back in early 90's at the Brixton Academy in
London. I am sad 4 U that you've not had this experience. It was for me, one
of the great highlights of my life to stand in front of the stage and see
these legends perform. I hope I will be able to experience this again if
they ever do a live gig in this country, tho they must be getting on in
years now. It won't be the same seeing them perform in their wheelchairs.
Shaun
Hi there
Kraftwerk won't be at the Festival in UK in April (just seen ATP site). This
is particularly disappointing on a personal note as I am UK based and have
never seen them before.
Rob.

After a long peiod of inactivity I finally updated the concertdates
http://www.xs4all.nl/~twingo/kraftwerk/ page with info of the various mails
I have received. Thanks to all who have contributed to me and Klaus! (if
tried to me all you in person, but perhaps I did forget someone)
Nice additions are of course the more earlier ones: a 1970 gig!, and a list
of 1975 gigs from Wolfgang Flur himself.
But offcourse also the more recent ones are a welcome add to the list. Still
there are some dates which puzzle me. Australia 16-20 Sept.1981 (2 concerts
on Sydney on 16 and 17 are sure, but might there be 3, and what about
Melbourne?) & USA 25-30 July 1981. Some I have added with comments, some I
still have to sort out.
I notice that the closer you get to completion the more difficult it gets to

artwork för Kraftwerk. He was a russian futurist,
mainly active in the 20:s. The Man Machine artwork was
done by Karl Kleifish, although inspired by El
Lissitzky, as the phrase "inspired by El Lissitzky" on

To be correct: The back cover of Mensch Maschine is a detail from "Von zwei
Quadraten, Szene 8", a book graphic series by El Lissitzky, 1922; 28 x 22,3

A fair point! Lazlo seems to have given up on us, so we are now in a state
of... Anarchy! (A) We can brawl and riot - or decide to get on with each
other, for once. I can't say I'm hopeful - there are just too many
conflicting outlooks on this list - but let's try, yes?
OJ, since we're chatting so reasonably ;-D I'll confess that your reaction
to Nicolau seemed to me unacceptably aggressive. That's my subjective view
of course, and I expect that from your perspective you just felt you were
defending yourself from yet more criticism. But your email style is
deliberately provocative, so some criticism is inevitable, no? You used to
respond in good spirit, I hope you are still able to do so!
Anyway, I hope we can all carry on here constructively. But without a list

more Kraftwerk knowledge than someone else. I feel like people are waiting

This forum should be for fun. Music is fun, lets stop trying to outdo each

Hi,
I'm new to the list. I teach electronic music at Texas A&M University and
have been using Kraftwerk's music in my teaching.
Having heard a rumor from several sources, including the archives of this
list, about Kraftwerk and Stockhausen performing (either together or
separately) music by each other.
Although, I've read that this rumor is not true in a number of places
(including this list), my experience is that sometimes, there is a grain of
truth to rumors.
If anyone does know for a fact that they did either perform together (even
if it was just sharing the same concert with each performing their own
works), I would be most grateful to know the details of the concert and
would especially like to obtain either audio recordings, photographs,
and/or videorecordings of such an event.
Thanks for the help.

Not where Kraftwerk are concerned. ;-)

Why not ask for the tour poster and T-shirt as well? :-D Sorry Howard, I'm
just teasing, but this does sound to me like common reactions to the other
rumours. It would be fascinating if it were true, but no-one has yet come
forward having claimed they were at such a concert (or even that they know
someone who did!).
I guess it's conceivable that a very early Kraftwerk (before their pop days
- remember Stockhausen's hatred of the martial beat of popular music!)
performed at the same festival. But I doubt it. As for the rumour that they
performed each others works, well, that just strikes me as preposterous, to
be blunt! Kraftwerk would lack the man(machine)power to perform most of
Stockhausen's works (wouldn't they?) and why would an established composer
who had been doing live electronics in the 60s want to perform the work of
an experimental rock duo in the early 70s?
> Thanks for the help.
I hope the above is of help. I still think the rumour is incredible, but
such discussions can still be rewarding.

On pg 18 of "Man Machine and Music", Stockhausen is mentioned
as an influence, and it's described how they (Hutter and Schneider)
went to a Stockhausen concert. If any direct cooperation/performance
has ever taken place I'm sure it would have been mentioned somewhere.
