Chinese BuddhismFirst brought to prominence by the Han emperor Ming Ti in the first century CE, missionaries travelled between India and China by land and sea for centuries. Early sutras were translated in Central Asia before introduction into China. The appearance of Kumarajiva as translator in the Imperial court in 401 CE was a great boost to Buddhism in China.Early priests were reknowned for their magical prowess. This helped explain their popularity with barbarian invaders. Despite such influences, and its Indian roots, Buddhism in China borrowed from Daoism to achieve a unique nature.
