English Toffee
 
 
1 lb    Butter  
1/2 cup    Water  
2 cups    Sugar  
  Nuts, chopped  
  Chocolate chips  
 
1 Combine Butter, water and sugar in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil and stir about 10 minutes, until it turns to a dark amber color or reaches 285°-310° on a candy thermometer.
2 Pour candy into a cookie sheet.
3 While still warm, spread chocolate pieces over candy as they melt. Sprinkle nuts over chocolate and press in lightly.
Variations:
1 While still warm, mark or score for cutting into squares
2 Chopped nuts can be sprinkled on the cookie sheet, then pour the candy mixture onto them.
