Realm Systems: Software Configuration Manager
When I was hired at Realm System the company add three software engineers and one hardware engineer. The company main server was a Sun E10000, very unreliable. While my offical duties where a Project Manager from the start I was specifying the configurating of server machines. Since I had the most Systems Administration experience I was also installing and configurating the servers.
During this time I started bringing in SCM and collaboration tools. By the time I asked to lead a SCM team in Feburary 2005 I had converted the company running CVS for source control to running Subversion, installed 9 fileserver and release build machines. In installed an managed Jira - issue tracking system, Confluence - web base collaboration wiki, Parabuld - continues build system and 2000 line bash script to control the release build system.
Realm Systems: Lead Project Manager
In November 2003 I was recruited away from Cimarron Software by the CTO and the CEO of Realm Systems to stat a new project. This project is a rack mounted server appliance. Realm Systems at this time had two senior and two junior programmers, working on the mobile client device. I was given cart blanc to get this project up and running. The server hardware was to be off the self 1U or 2U units. Since the client device was to run JAVA I decided the server application should also be JAVA, hoping to get some code reuse. I ended up recruiting 5 senior JAVA programs for the project.
Now while my server project was making great progress and hitting our goals the mobile client had issues. The mobile client as that time was all JAVA with a custom OS, the chosen protocol between the two was SOAP. It was deemed this design had to much overhead to be practical.
At this time the company decided to change directions by having the mobile device run Linux. Many new Linux experts where hired to enable this change. I was asked if I would change positions to start a real Software Configuration Management department and help with the setup of a QA department.
Cimarron Software: Software Configuration Manager
I was hired into a new position for the company of Software Configuration Manager. At the time Cimarron Software did not have anyone responsiable for SCM. A major problem for them was that they didn't know what was shipping to customers. I started up a SCM project for the company so that Cimarron knew what was in each release and could reproduce the release from source.
Cimarron product was written in JAVE, deployed with Jboss with a Oracle backend DB server. The project build system was handled by Make. The final packaging of the product was done with InstallSheild 6.
