THE AVENGERS

Stars: Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman, Sean Connery, Jim Broadbent, Fiona Shaw. Written by Don MacPherson. Directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik. Rated PG for action violence and some innuendo.

British secret agents John Steed (Ralph Fiennes) and Emma Peel (Uma Thurman) team up to thwart the weather-controlling plans of Sir August de Wynter (Sean Connery).

"The Avengers", based on the 1960’s TV series of the same name, contains most, if not all, of the ingredients necessary for top-notch escapist entertainment. It has heroes worth rooting for, a charismatic villain, a stellar cast working at its hardest, good special effects, witty dialogue, and an intriguing plot. What it doesn’t have is cohesion of vision or good editing. Bits and pieces of the movie taken by themselves are fasicinating, but the whole is something less than the sum of its parts. Personally, I’d like to see this film turned into a franchise because it features such wonderful characters. Unfortunately this is as unlikely as the film itself becoming a blockbuster.
