THE BIRDCAGE

Stars: Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Hank Azaria, Christine Baranski, Dan Futterman, Calista Flockhart, Tom McGowan. Written by Elaine May. Directed by Mike Nichols. Rated R for adult content, profanity.

"The Birdcage" is a remake of "La Cage Aux Folles". It stars Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as a gay couple who attempt to fool the parents (Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest) of Williams' son's fiancee into believing that they are a straight couple who promote traditional family values. The charade is necessary because Hackman plays a senator with eyes on the presidency who must avoid any hint of a scandal.

Well-acted, especially by Nathan Lane as the feminine one and Hank Azaria as a house boy, "The Birdcage" is an actor's showcase. However, the film isn't funny enough often enough to be thoroughly entertaining. Homophobes steer clear.
