COP LAND

Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra. Written and directed by James Mangold. Rated R for violence, profanity, adult themes.

Freddy Heflin (Sylvester Stallone), who couldn’t become a police officer because of deafness in one ear, became instead the sheriff of Garrison, a New Jersey town that many NYPD officers call home. When Internal Affairs officer Mo Tilden (Robert De Niro) asks him to keep an eye out for signs of corruption in Garrison, he is initially reluctant because of his friendship with several cops and his continuing desire to some day join them. But when the stink of wrong-doing becomes too much for him to bear, he takes on the dangerous assignment.

"Cop Land" is a great crime drama with a surprisingly good, low-key performance by Stallone. The other performances from its all-star cast are equally good, and the story is relatively original. It does, however, contain a fairly steady stream of profanity and violence and is not recommended for children, with or without a chaperone.
