THE FIFTH ELEMENT

Stars: Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, Chris Tucker, Luke Perry, Brion James, Tommy Lister Jr. Written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen. Directed by Luc Besson. Rated PG-13 for violence, brief nudity.

Every 5,000 years supreme evil comes from outer space to destroy the world. Guardians from a distant planet have always stepped in to help out mankind, but when the 23rd century rolls around and the ancient menace is again upon us, something goes terribly wrong. An eccentric businessman (Gary Oldman) has sent out his enslaved workforce to destroy the guardians before they can reach earth. When they are done, only a few cells of one of the guardians survive, but that is enough material from which earth scientists can create a clone.

The clone is created in human form as a beautiful woman (Milla Jovovich) named Leeloo. Leeloo only speaks an ancient tongue and seems terribly naïve, but that changes in short time. She crosses paths with an ex-military cab driver named Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) who is more than happy to escort this exquisite creature around town and across the galaxy. Only Leeloo possesses the power and knowledge to stop the ancient evil. If she fails, we are all doomed.

"The Fifth Element" is a wild, effects-laden and, above all, fun sci-fi film. Its like a comic book come to life; a pulp story full of imagination and wonder. Not without flaws and certainly not for all tastes, it is, nonetheless, non-stop, energetic entertainment for those who catch its peculiar groove.
