- the ways in which these peoples dealt with each other and
- discovering new ways that the peoples of the American West could have learned to deal more positively with these differences.

Testing
- Quizzes & Exams
- Quizzes (20-45pts each) and Exams (50-100pts each) will be given at varying intervals thoughout the course, usually at the beginning of the period. Tests will be announced several days in advance so that students may have adequate time to prepare for them.
To take a quiz or an exam a student must be present in class! Students who are tardy will begin the quiz or exam immediately after checking in with Mr. Charon, however, they may not have sufficient time to complete the test. Students who are excused MUST make up the test by Friday of the week following the original due date to receive full credit. Students who sluff class will not be allowed a make-up! Students who miss for other reasons will be dealt with on an individual basis.
Simulations/Field Trips
- Parts of this class will be interactive, that is, students are active participants in LIVING the curriculum being studied. Past experience in this course has shown that students actually obtain a much better understanding of peoples, situations, and events that took place in the West by participating in these events than could ever hope to be achieved by any other teaching method. Since this portion of the class is considered to be a very important part of this course, activities in this category will count highly on the grade. Failure of students to participate in these activities will result in marked lowering of the grade. Requirements for these events will be discussed in class AND will also be made available on PowerSchool for review by parents/guardians and students.
Projects and Assignments
- Projects and Assignments will be on varyng topics and will require work done both inside and outside of class. Content expectations and grading procedures for each project or assignment will be discussed in class before students begin working AND will also be made available on PowerSchool for review by parents/guardians and students.
Homework
- Homework will deal mainly with work to be done outside of class on Special Projects and/or Assignments.
Journals (spiral notebook preferred)
- Each student will keep a journal in which s/he will write on selected topics. Topics to be written about will be discussed in class. Each student will be expected in most cases to write at least one page (20pts) per assignment. Journals will be collected for grading at the end of each term.
Make-up Work
- All assignments/tests/etc. for this course will be listed on PowerSchool. Descriptions for each item will be included (this information is found by clicking on the assignment/test/etc). Students will have until Friday of the week following the work's original due date to complete it for credit. After that time, students will NOT be allowed make-up. Students who are absent the day work is assigned AND who are excused by the school administration will be able to make up the work for full credit.
