The Price of Glory

Oh, how this bath feels good. Marako let the warmth soak into her body. This was needed medicine for her aching head. Marako had partaken in a little too much of Ishi's sake last night.

Marako was unaccustomed to all the attention that Suzu-san was giving her. Marako knew herself to be brave and a good fighter when it was necessary, but the way Suzu-san saw and described Marako it made her sound like the bravest Unicorn there ever was. Marako was glad, though, that because of her victory at the Topaz Challenge, more Unicorns were taking the opportunity to go and challenge the other clans. Suzu-san just kept talking and talking and the sake was the only thing that made the night go faster.

Marako shook her head and sunk into the water a little deeper. Why did the attention bother her so much? Attention and recognition were what had been driving her. She wanted to be more like her sister.

How does Kamoko-sama handle all the attention that she receives? Marako thought to herself.

Marako sat there and started to focus on what was needed for today. A clear mind, and a swift and steady hand. The mock battle was before her and being captain of her team was an honor. Her team would be hard to beat. Two Shugenja – Kitsu Yosunomi and Iuchi Honda, a Dragon – Mirumoto Uriko, who Marako knew could take on just about anything, two Scorpion – Sugai and Kohara – it is always better for Scorpions to be with you than against you. Finally her second in command, Hida Naoki. "This will truly be an interesting day," Marako said to herself.

A servant came in and helped Marako out of the bath and into her finest Kimono. Marako fixed her hair with her new combs and dabbed on her new perfume.

"Now I am ready to greet the Iris Festival," she said as she stepped into the dawn's light.
