Our Austrian Errand.

The last Austria Vienna Mission Song.

The last Austria Vienna Mission Song, Our Austrian Errand, was written in September 1987, by a missionary, Sister Ursula Keller. Sister Keller is from Salt Lake City. She served in Austria from 1986-1987. President Farrell Smith was the mission president at that time.

Our Austrian Errand was originally written in English. In November 1987, Sister Michele Malzl (1987-1988), from Salzburg, Austria, wrote German words for Our Austrian Errand, and it became Unser Österreichischer Auftrag. Unfortunately, Unser Österreichischer Auftrag did not survive the merger with the Germany Munich Mission, despite revisions to make it fit the new combined mission.

Suzanne Reeve reports, "As of November 2001, when I left the mission (I served May 2000-Nov. 2001), "Unser Oesterreichischer Auftrag" was going strong as the mission song. We sang it as the closing song at every zone conference and at every testimony meeting when a group of missionaries went home. And from a phone conversation with President Schulze in early 2002, he said the Munich/Austria mission was going to adopt it, although he didn't say if they'd change the words to accommodate Germany as well. But he seemed pleased that it would continue on after the consolidation of missions."

Suzanne sent an update, stating. "I heard from some more recently returned missionaries that Pres. Schulze rewrote some of the words this spring so they're applicable to Germany or Austria, and the song is being kept for the new mission."

Talsan Schulzke wrote on 12 March 2003 to tell us: "Ich kenne die Suzanne Reeves und zu dem was mit der Oesterreichischen Auftrag (das Lied) geschehen ist, muss ich leider sagen dass das Lied wird nie mehr gesungen in der Deutschland-Muenchen-Oesterreich Mission. Denn es gab ein starkes, negatives Gefuehl der Uneinigkeit zwischen den Missionaren Oesterreichs und denen Deutschlands und daher wurde das ganze abgeschafft als Missionslied. Schade, denn Praesident Michael Schulze hat wirklich schoene Woerte dazu geschrieben um es mit der deutschen Mission zu vereinigen, aber es ging nicht gut am Anfang der Zusammenlegung der zwei Missionen. Aber jetzt ist es viel besser und Praesident Wirthlin hat die Missionen sehr gut vereinigt (nicht ein leichter Job, gel?)."

The Modern Austrian National Anthem.

The Modern Austrian National Anthem was offically adopted by the Austrian Cabinet on February 25, 1947. Some claim Mozart was the composer, but Austrian scholarship shows the evidence to be in favor of Johann Holzer (1753-1818) as composer. The lyrics are by Paula Preradovic (1887-1951).
