But here, I can offer some additional information, for whatever it's worth..... In the January 2002 issue of the AAII Journal (American Association of Individual Investors) there was an article called "Stock Strategy Performance: The Winners and Losers in 2001." The article opens by explaining that for the last four years they have presented and discussed a new monthly stock screen on the Stock Screens segment of AAII.com, while simultaneously tracking the success and updating the results of all previous screens. At the time of the article they had 50 screens covering a variety of investment approaches, ranging from small-cap growth to large-cap value. At the beginning of each month they run each screen and produce a table of passing companies for each screen, thus constructing a fresh hypothetical portfolio for each screen every month. A stock is sold if it no longer meets criteria, and new stocks are added if they qualify. They apply no additional screens, and just track the performance of buying and selling each month at the month-end closing. Their Joseph Piotroski screen (seeking financially strong low-price-to-book-value stocks) was the best performing strategy in 2001. it showed a gain of 87.3% in 2001, after having showed a loss of 0.9% on the year 2000. Of note was the following: "So far, the growth-oriented screen that follows the William O'Neil CANSLIM approach has shown some of the most consistent strong performance gains: 53.5%, 38.0%, 36.6%, and 28.2% over the last four years. The Martin Zweig screen is the other long-term standout, with a four year gain of 299.7%." Three cheers for WON's CANSLIM, I say!
