As Katherine mentioned, linear extrapolations can be misleading for stocks
which tend to trade heavier in the morning and/or the late afternoon. An
automatic trigger based on a linear formula may signal a buy for a stock
that forms such a pattern (like a cup). For stocks like this, I sometimes
use a mental trigger (based on a back-of-envelope calculation done once upon
a time) that by 11:00, the stock should have traded 1/3 of its ADV. But it
depends on the stock...

Katherine and Harbol:

Second day on the job and I get to contribute!

Attached is a handy Excel Real-Time volume calculator I created. All you do
is enter the stock's average daily volume and the time of day you took the
quote. You'll then get a read out, based on what the volume should be at
that moment and how it compares to the average.

Hi Harbol,

I don't know if there's a website that does this, but the formula you would
use is:

Average Daily Volume (50 days) = ADV
Hours market is open per day = 6.5 hrs

ADV*1.5/6.5 = minimum avg volume per hour necessary. (MAV)

At the time you are evaluating, compare the total volume to MAV*hrs market
has been open and compare.

If Volume>=MAV*hrs open, then it meets the minimum breakout volume.

Extrapolations are ok, but sometimes misleading when big volume hits early
in the day and then trails off. Sometimes best to wait to do this
calculation until the market has more than an hour under its belt.

Katherine

HI,
What is the method or formula to extrapolate the current volume in order
to judge that it would be more or less as compaired to 150% of 50 DMA Volume

?

Is there any web site that can send alert signal to this effect ?

Thanks,
Harbol.
